Favorite "Rock N Roll" Musical?

So, it's pretty self explanatory. Rock n Roll musicals, which one is your favorite? If "other", please specify!

Re: Favorite "Rock N Roll" Musical?

Spinal Tap, Blues Brothers and Pick Of Destiny aren't musicals. They are movies about musicians, musicals use songs to tell the story. All three performances in these three movies are part of the movie, they don't tell the story.

I have to disagree with you on The Blues Brothers...When Aretha is Singing to Matt Murphy it's not just a performance, Same with Ray Charles from Rays Music Exchange, as well as James Brown in Church...There are performances in the movie, as well as using music to tell the story, but I believe those performances also help tell the story. A very fine line between clever and stupid! Like Jailhouse Rock at the end of the film. It is a performance and yet it is telling the story!! "Pick Of Destiny" just seemed lame and I didn't see it so I can't comment on it. Since "Spinal Tap" and "That Thing You Do" were based on fictitious bands I don't believe their performances were anything more than integral arts of the overall story...

The performance did not tell any of the story, if those scenes were taken out of the movie nothing would change, and two scenes do not define a movie. The Ray Charles scene doesn't tell a story anymore than the dance scene in Clerks 2 does. It was just an excuse to have him perform. Singing in churches is fairly commonplace, if Jake were to sing directly to Elwood about needing to get the money to save the church, and maybe a scene where John Belushi sings about arresting them or any number of other boring things, then you'd have a point, but finding an excuse to showcase classic R&B performer doing their thing doesn't make a movie a musical.

Well, you can say that about any Musical! Take "Greased Lightening" It might as well have been a video...Taken out of context it's just a performance. So making an excuse to use a classic R&B song is the same as making an excuse to write a brand new song in a movie/play. Take "Mame" out of the musical and it's a song that can certainly stand on it's own, or "Seventy Six Trombones", or "Oklahoma" even. A musical is not necessarily a movie where the actors sing their lines, but one where music is used in a major way to tell the story. I consider "The Rose" a musical too...

I understand what you're saying, but you're wrong, and I like arguing with you.
