Cool Re: How old were you when you first learned how to play the guitar?

I started playing guitar at age 13 although I wanted to play since I was 5, my Dad is my biggest influence musically wise , he got me into Classical music, Jazz and bands like: Deep purple, Ten Years After, Johnny Winter, Hendrix, Santana, the Gypsy kings, the Eagles, Al Dimeola, Pink Floyd etc… He always wanted to play guitar but never had the chance to so he encouraged me to learn, and that’s how I got my first electric guitar (yes folks I started with an electric right away I did not go through the acoustic guitar primer even though I toyed around with an acoustic guitar since I was 5!) I guess all I ever wanted to play was electric guitar and Heavy Metal in my younger days, of course nowadays I’m more diverse and enjoy playing and listening to many other styles of music.

Re: How old were you when you first learned how to play the guitar?

I started when I was fourteen. The same age Joe Satriani started.

I just fell in love with the guitar at a young age. So then I started to learn how to play. First on an acoustic, and my first electric I got like 1 -2 years later.

Personally, I rarely really sit down to practise new techniques. When I just play, I just stumble upon things, and learn that way.

Wow i always thought i started learning a bit too late but it seems like most of you guys started about the same age i did, but then its never too late to learn is it?. Also just one other thing what type of guitar did you guys first start to play eg: acoustic or electric. thanks for your feedback and keep the posts coming.

Got my first guitar when I was 13, didn't REALLY start to feel the "need" to play until I was about 15.

Re: How old were you when you first learned how to play the guitar?

I started when I was 11 or 12, took some lessons and practiced about 3 hours a day. Then all but stopped playing from about 19-22, then got back into it, but I feel a down phase comming on soon.

Talking Re: How old were you when you first learned how to play the guitar?

Where are the:

I'm over 40 and im just learning now.

I'm over 50 and im just learning now.....options

From what I've been able to gather, it really doesn't matter what age you start.

There are 4 year olds that play better than folks with 30 years experience.

There are 40 year olds with 1 year experience that play better than 25 year olds with 20 years experience!!

It's doesn't matter how long you've played. *Passion* is where it's at. Especially when coupled with natural ability

Mike,

I was 16 when I "borrowed" your Dads Les Paul, and eventually gave it back to him 11 years later LOL, after I got my first guitar, the Jackson. How is the Jackson going by the way, you got it back in tune now?
