How tight do you hold your pick?

How is your grip on your pick when playing?
I'm finding I hold it too tightly, and try to loosen the grip which actually makes my playing easier but after a few minutes I'm back to a hard grip again. Any tips for loosening my grip?

I put about medium pressure when holding my pick. I don't want it to move around and make inefficient motions, but I also don't want to hold it so tight that I tense up.

I know it's a bad habit, and I should probably ease off, but I do grip the pick quite hard.

I'm trying to loosen my grip, using Jazz III's in a band situation I grip hard because they go flying out of my fingers all the time. Just got a Red Bear Big Jazzer with grips that looks like it is set to change that.

Depends what i'm playing and what sort of pick attack/sound I want. For metal downpicking i'd hold it pretty tight, but for jangly clean strummed chords i'd use a looser, more relaxed grip. Horses for courses.

Rock on!

Tight, but loose. Just like Led Zep.

This is the same for me. The way I hold my pick resembles the way I (try to) play.

Holding the pick too tight while strumming makes my upstrokes sound bad and if I gold the pick too loose with alternate picking I sometimes unintentionally hit another string.

I'd say about average tightness. Obviously if you are doing some strumming you'll lighten up, and occassionally I grip it a little tighter if I'm doing some really fast picking or something, but nothing that goes into the realm of uncomfortability.

Loosely for me because I like to have a relaxed approach to picking. Almost easy going!

Mine is what I would deem medium, my picking comes from my right hand being anchored to the bridge and then just my thumb and index finger in a somewhat circular motion.
Picks used are Dunlop Jazz III and 3.0mm Stubby.

Less tight=less tension=more speed!

I have a buddy who picks so fast that he has to use 2.0 Delrins because the pick doesn't bounce back in time for his speed...I'm not an insanely fast player, and in truth am probably more an average bluesey type player than a shred guy...Wish I wasn't but...

Pick wise I use anything middle of the road (orange tortex, Fender mediums, dark pink Delrins)

I love to feel the flex in a pick and I'll use that when playing. Also, whether someone thinks I suck (which has happened) or they think I'm awesome (which has also happened) I like to be relaxed when I play. I feel I come across a little more genuine than when I'm tense...Obviously...

Re: How tight do you hold your pick?

Medium. It needs to be a balance between control and speed.

I like to play a really fast tremelo on one string, then slow it down and pay careful attention to detail. It needs to be just enough to get the right dynamic without unnecesary tension. Then when it's sped up it sounds way better.

I put about a medium grip on my picks. Not too much, not too little.
