Jeff Beck, without question. I love Vai, but Beck has a control with the bar that no one else does. He has a bigger "bag of tricks" than Vai when it comes to the bar, IMO. Of course, we'll have to see where Steve takes it- Beck's best bar work has definately been his later stuff. Steve still has years to catch up!

I lean more towards Vai. Beck has incredible bar control, but I don't think his playing using the bar emotes the intent or feeling in the music as well as Vai's does.

While I do enjoy Beck's playing, I'm biased in that I've been a big fan of Vai's since the DLR days when I first started playing in the mid-to-later 80's.

I beg to differ with you timi...Vai uses it to go from one note to another in lieu of bending or moving up/down the frets ALL the time. He uses it for EVERYTHING from flutters/divebombs/vibrato to moving from note to note to removing the bar from the trem and using it like a chime and anything else one could fathom.

Michael Lee firkins is on par or even above Vai when it comes to this issue. Listen to his first record. There is a disclaimer where it says there are no slide guitars..... its just unbelievable.

Vai has certainly mastered it more... but Jeff Beck pretty much pioneered it! I have the highest respect for both artists...
