$1400 budget - which guitar for newbie??

Hello All,
This is my first post here. Cool site.

I've just recently returned to playing after about a 15 year hiatus (thanks to marriage, the birth of two kids, career, etc.). I finally have time to start practicing again but I'm not too well versed in some of the modern equipment.
I currently have an older RG270 but I'm looking to upgrade significantly. I've been a HUGE Vai fan since Flexable and would like to buy a JEM7V but that's a little over my budget (according to my wife ).

So, my question is what should I be looking at for around $1400 + tax/shipping? I would prefer a new model but I'm open to whatever.

I have the opportunity to buy a brand new Bad Horsie (w/case and warranty) with a few minor scratches for $1700 + tax. Should I jump on this or go ahead and bite the bullet and buy a 7V??? (With my wife's consent of course ). I could probably talk her into spending the extra $$$ for it if that's the best route. I looked at one of these in person and wow, I liked it but if there was a decent alternative for a lesser price, I'd like to hear about it.

Thanks for any input/advice/suggestions!

You and I have similer paths...

I too have just returned to playing and having to "catch up".

You will find few used Jems in the classifieds here, but if you are thinking new, I would suggest talking with Rich Harris from Ibanez rules.

Welcome btw

+1 Rich is the man and he always has some great stuff. You could try e-bay as well. I have seen some Jem 7dbks go cheap on there as well as some other used Ibanezes but, I see you want a 7V, you might find one cheap on there. I'd go with Rich first though. I bought 2 UVs from him and could've been more happier.

Welcome to the forum by the way and welcome back to the world of playing guitar.

Re: $1400 budget - which guitar for newbie??

Keep in mind that Ibanez releases a new line of guitars this Winter at NAMM 2007 (we expect) so you may want to wait and see if something catches your eye at that time. That's my plan for the next Ibanez Jem.

The Jem BRMR is an excellent choice. Remeber it has Breed pickups vs Evo's in the 7VWH. The Breeds are just amazing IMO.

I recommend going with Rich at Ibanezrules.com too. Hope this is helpful. Good luck!

Paul

The JEM7vwh really is a great guitar, and Ibanez Rules really is the only place to buy in my opinion. Rich will give you the best setup and cleanest guitar possible be it new or used. I was in a similar situation a few months back. I have a 2 1/2 year old daughter and another on the way. Had to sort of "ask" to spend 2K on my JEM! LOL. Well, it's a done deal and I couldn't be happier. Good luck in your guitar shopping.

Rich Harris has a couple DBK's for around $1100- you'd save some money there to parlay into upgrading the rest of your setup. What kind of amp do you have?

Re: $1400 budget - which guitar for newbie??

Thanks for all of the responses!

I checked out Rich's site but he didn't have anything right now that I was really interested in.

I wanted to upgrade my current Crate GX30 amp also and I have a friend with a nice Carvin amp for sale. So, I decided to just hold off on the JEM for now to see what new models may come out, if any. (Thanks for that suggestion Paul!)

In the meantime, I went ahead and ordered an RG2550.

This will leave me some money leftover to buy my friends amp as well. After the first of the year, I'll see what Ibanez is offering then and I may move up.

So, my new 2550 should be here Friday so I guess I'll get to hang out on the Prestige forums for a while.

Hopefully, I'll be a JEM owner early next year though.

This is a VERY informative site. I've spent most of yesterday and today reading through the old posts.

Thanks again!
