10 Things You Wish You Knew About Guitars (Before You Bought One.)

Hi, I'm Ava, the blog moderator for Jemsite's newest community blog. I've been asked to write a short blog post for another blog on 10 Things You Wish You Knew About Guitars (Before You Bought One) and I'd like to turn into a Jemsite user-friendly concept. (10 Things Jemsite Users Wish They Knew about Guitars (Before They Bought One.)

I wanted to make it informative, funny, and witty. So I'm asking the experts! What's one or two things you guys would you guys put on this list? If I use it, I'll try to give you credit in the post.

Thanks,
Ava

When I first started out I wish I had known that everyone has an opinion and some of them will preach their opinion to you like it's gospel.

The Internet gives you great access to experts, but even more access to folks who don't know what they're talking about. I wish that it was possible to easily tell which was which.

Well, if it has to be witty, I'm the wrong guy.
But, I guess I wish I knew:
1. That spending a lot more on a guitar wouldn't improve my chances of becoming a rock star. It would only mean more payment on the credit card.
2. Just because someone else can make that baby sing, doesn't mean I will be able to. Therefore, signature guitars can be a huge a waste of money.
3. The amount of practice you put in make a lot more difference than the amount of money you spend.
4. Reviews from other people are close to completely meaningless. Play it yourself and you decide.
5. 7 strings aren't always better than 6.
6. The tree it came from makes a difference. If there are 5 of the same guitars on the wall, play them all, one will sound the best.

More to come....

That literally every last detail of the guitar is equally important, when it comes to me ending up liking it in terms of playability, sound and aesthetics.

I didn't know this when I bought my Ibanez S470. Which has jumbo frets: And a non-rounded neck shape: And a locking nut: Etc.

So true, the law of diminishing returns fully applies to guitars.

And this includes the Les Paul.

Re: 10 Things You Wish You Knew About Guitars (Before You Bought One.)

I know I'm gonna catch some hell for this, but oh well .

#1-10:

That the best way to get exactly what you want while having something that's pretty much one of a kind is to get guitars custom built for you, rather than spending thousands of dollars on company guitars and still feeling like one or two things arent 100% to your liking. Surely this idea isn't gonna appeal to everyone but for me personally, I'd bought and sold dozens of guitars without ever finding a company guitar that "felt completely right" to me.

Also, a #11..."you get what you pay for" is often a lie.

This would be a lot easier to follow if it was all in one thread instead of several

Yeah but if Ava wants to use several threads to help with the blog, who are we to argue?

Re: 10 Things You Wish You Knew About Guitars (Before You Bought One.)

1. Play play play -> you will get better

2. A cheap guitar will make you play worse if you are a beginner, but an expensive one wont make you play better (it just wont stop you to do so on your own)

3. Signature guitars can be good guitars

4. Fender has nothing to do with Leo

5. There is a reason why some artists change their endorsement like their underwear and it is not better instruments...

6. There is a reason why some artists do not change their endorsements and it is not the money...

7. If you want a really good strat or tele: buy a G&L and not a Fender

8. Les Pauls are overrated and overpriced

9. Buy cheap and you will buy twice

10. Custom made guitars can be very cost effective and they will be built to your specs
