7 string tunings

What is the most popular alternate tuning for a 7 string? I know a lot of people tune thier 7's to A, is that the same thing as tuning a 6 to D?

It's the same idea, yes, just on a different string.

When I still had my RG15271 I tuned it (from low to high) E-A-D-G-B-E-A.
Standard tuning with an extra bright A-string... Some serious ear-piearcing notes from that guitar!

in one of the guitar clinic videos, Gilbert uses a 7-string tuned to:

D-D-D-C-F-A-D

with the 3 low d's in different octaves. it sounds really cool

um, we have a 7-string forum for this stuff... just a thought.

Drop-A has its advantages, but I'm still partial to standard 7-string tuning. it makes the transition easier as a lead instrument, IMO- scale patterns on the low and high B are paralell. You can do some interesting arpeggio shapes in drop-A, but i still feel tat standad is the most flexible. Which must be why it's standard.

On an unrelated note, anyone ever tried playing metal in DADGAD? Man, you can do some cool heavy-yet-suspended sounding things int hat tuning. I could see it working gorgeously in a tool-meets-smashing pumpkins sort of environment.
