77FP Wiring

I have a 77FP and the pickups have 3 wires, red, white, and shield. The pickups have almost no gain. The neck and bridge I assume are stock Dimarzio's because they are faded pink but out of the 23 guitars I've owned, the weakness of these pickups is pathetic. Coaxing out any squeal is a huge challenge. My question is: Does 3 wires sound right? If so these things have to be miswired and a wiring diagram would be a lifesaver. Thanks in advance!

Look at the back plate of the pickups. Does it say Dimarzio there? Mine came with 4 wires.

Re: 77FP Wiring

OK, I'm going to do my best at not seeming like a complete moron. Upon further inspection there is a group of three small black single wires twisted together and soldered the the back of the vol pot. The red, white, and shield are all jacketed together. I'm waiting for my new 1/4" jack to get here (tomorrow) before breaking out the iron and unscrewing the pickgaurd to see if these all lead to individual pickups which is most likely the case. That would make the wiring scheme incorrect seeing as how right now the red and white are parallel versus the white and black. I've never seen pickups with a wire outside the main jacket which brought me to my first conclusion. Please forgive me.

I am 200% sure this is a genuine 1988 Jem 77FP. That's not even in question.

Re: 77FP Wiring

So I fixed it. After pulling up the pickgaurd I saw where someone had improperly paired wires and spliced the 5 conductors into a 3 conductor wire. It was a hack wire job but it wails now!

Re: 77FP Wiring

Kick butt--check you out! Not a Chiba AND you found the problem. Gotta love it when it turns out easy.
