Anyone has replaced the Evos at the JEM7V-WH? Gravity Storm? Doug Aldrich?

I’ve recently purchased a JEM 7V-WH and, although the Evolution pickups have their special character, I prefer the Suhr Doug Aldrich (currently installed on my RG550LTD) or the Dimarzio Gravity Storm (currently unused).

The Evos have a kind of “crunch” or “grit” while the Aldrich and the GS are "smoother". Still wild, but rounder.

I am wondering if anyone has replaced the Evo bridge pickup at the JEM7V, and what are the results.

I am also thinking about which one I would install at the JEM: the Aldrich or the GS.

Just curiosity: Why Vai replaced the Gravity Storms with Evos? Was it just marketing "evolution" to sell new products? Is he still using guitars with the GS?

There would be a black pickup on the white 7V but, who cares? I already have a white pickup (bluesbucker DP183) at my dark RG550LTD

Re: Anyone has replaced the Evos at the JEM7V-WH? Gravity Storm? Doug Aldrich?

I've finally replaced the Bridge Evo with a Gravity Storm. That's my tone! Now I feel like home with this guitar.

The Evolution has a nasty grit for my taste. I also find that the Gravity Storm behaves more nicely with close-to-breackup tones.

BTW: it is ugly how they wire this guitar. They stretch and cut the pickup cables to the minimum distance, leaving a very short length. That is not nice. All guitars I've seen so far, from cheap to expensive, including J-Customs, accommodate the pickup wires without cutting them too much.

The wire to the output jack also has minimal length, leaving very little room for manipulating the pickguard.

FireEagle likes this.
