Buy by the piece or complete?

I already have an FP and VWH, but I hate to play them all the time in fear of damaging them. So I decided to look for a "beater" Jem. What would be more cost effective, pieces or whole?

You've got 2 perfectly good jems already man. Just be careful. Unless you're a complete klutz it's a safe bet you won't damage your guitars.

Just get a beater RG and customize it how you like.

Guitars are meant to be played. So play them and quit worrying about it. You do a disservice to your guitars by not playing them. Any collector will tell you it's ok to play them. Just don't throw them around your neck or jump off of the couch with them and you'll be fine. They're guitars, not fine China.

I've gotta agree with you man. I played a blues gig last week where I used a strat for the whole thing except the encore (then I broke out the Jem).
I only have one Jem (I only have one Ibanez for that matter) and it felt SO good to play in a live situation that I now want to use it all the time. But I too am uncomfortable aout having my pride and joy as my main gigging guitar so I'm actualy looking at having a comlete reshuffle of my stable and filling it with RG's.
When I get back from Vegas and K.L. I'm gonna finish the projects I've got outstanding and sell up to buy two RG's for gigging (unless some of the Malay guys advise me on a good dealer/shop in KL )

...actualy this is a whole other thread.....

depends on how much you end up paying for each peice really
but a beat up jem youd be lucky to et for a 1000 on the bay
but but if you buy piece by piece it would be like
200-300 for neck
70-150 body
depends on what bridge you want edge you could get for 70-100
depending on year a neck plate- 20-40
electronics with pickups-about 120
tuners 30-120 depedns on what kind your looking for
locknut-12
nobs- 5-10
pickguard-10-30
dont forget shipping- with all this it would probably be around 200
a total of(using highest) 1082 but most likely youd be able to get each item in a good medium of that and probably be around 700usd
good luck

Re: Buy by the piece or complete?

Used would probably be best. Piece by piece is better left to a custom guitar. Sometimes that can get expensive if you buy quality hardware. Typical cost to build a nice guitar from parts is probably $700 and up.

wow, your way off, an authentic Jem neck usually goes for well over $500, heck some NOS PMC necks are $800+ (just ask Rich

It doesn't work anyway. I got myself a Epi LP Custom because i wanted someyhing to bang around, and than it was just standing around because i didn't want to play the epi but the others.

Re: Buy by the piece or complete?

how do you think i feel? just be extra careful and buy cliplocks to prevent the guitar from dropping, and keep it in a dry, room temperature space. BTW, i dont trust stands.

Re: Buy by the piece or complete?

I would say that unless you plan on selling them on at a later date, play them. My 7VWH is my main gigging guitar. It's the guitar i feel most comfortable on so makes no sense to leave it at home when i need it most.

But then i love it way too much to consider selling anyway.

im going by what i see not what other people see or hear
the guy didnt ask what do you think other people think, did he?
jeeks the cheapest i seen a jem neck on the bay go was 120 which was broken(though at the time i thought was crazy and now realise its worth it)- doesnt really matter though for me as my dad can do anything to a guitar
and thats what i consider a rip off and would not buy a neck for $500, my 1999universe only cost $600usd my usa custom graphic only $500 or a trade in and $200, trade was a korean hamer californian which cost me 160 or 260 dont remember
