Question Casting an acrylic resin body....

Hi all, just finishing up my current project and am eager to start a new one. I really want a jem 20th, but dont think ill ever be able to afford one, so I would like to see if it's feasable to cast an acrylic resin body. Anyone have any advise or ideas on how the best way to do this is?

Thanks,

-Matt

P.S.- Will post pics of my current project as soon as the paint is done!

I guess the problem would be polishing and buffing the acrylic... how to?

they make a special polish but I think elbow grease is more of a factor in polishing acrylic.

Re: Casting an acrylic resin body....

My only problem with getting it machined, other than the cost, is that i wouldnt be able to recreate the swirl design inside the body. Course, that might not be a bad thing....

Take a jem body, make a mould using silicone, pour resin.

You will probably need a slow curing product and rig up some sort of vacuum press to get the bubbles out.

Re: Casting an acrylic resin body....

Just get a 20th and finance it. Sounds easier said than done but I think you would be more satisfied in the end..plus it already swirled.

My 2 pennies...

Re: Casting an acrylic resin body....

Machine it, that is the cheapest solution that will give a good result. If you can't recreate the swirl in a solid sheet of plexiglass, you won't be able to do it in a mold.

There is a lot more to casting then dumping a bunch of molten acrylic into a mold.

Re: Casting an acrylic resin body....

Thanks for all the advise guys! Still not sure if I'll decide on this for my next project, but if i do i think i will try casting a mold and if that doesnt work, then try to get a body machined.

Thanks again,

-Matt
