DBK vs. VWH - why the price difference

Why is the DBK priced so much lower than the vwh? What is the difference? Just interested as i would love to buy a JEM/JS model, but it is looking like i really won't have enough money for a vwh.

Hey There

The reason why the 7vwh is so much more, is due to the fact that. that model is steve vais sig guitar

plus i think the wood cost more and the vine inlay is a costly thing
plus it has mother of pearl inlay

on some of the leafs

i personal think the only jem to get is a white

but thats just me

Regards

The VWH is more expensive than the DBK because it has:
  • marginally more expensive hardware (gold always costs a bit more)
  • a more expensive finish (the goopy black finish on the DBK requires pretty much zero work)
  • more expensive woods (alder + ebony vs. basswood + rosewood)
  • and more expensive inlay (27 pieces of mother-of-pearl and abalone vs. 12 plastic "screw head" dots)
Anything i've missed?

Percieved value - the VWH could cost $100 less than the D and they would still sell it for what they thought the buying public would pay

Just for the record. Both guitars are "Signature" guitars.

I think the reason for the confusion is that Vai's been using EVO for almost forever it seems to most people new to him (such as I was a couple years ago) meanwhile he has rarely been seen with a DBK.

Weserman, I like the VWH much better. It plays faster and has hotter pickups. If you do some research you can get a new VWH for a price quite close to the DBK priced at guitarcenter.

A few days ago I ordered a used VWH for $1050 including shipping. I can't sleep, eat, walk or talk. I am sooooo excited

Just for the uninitiated, I wanted to note that:

1) "Plays faster" is completely subjective. Al Dimeola played real fast on his Les Paul.
2) "hotter pickups" do not equal 'better pickups' as was implied. Again, there's some subjectivity here. I've played real loud pickups in no-name guits that sounded like crap. I've also played with '65 strat pickups that sounded godly.

That said, I prefer the DBK better, although I wouldn't mind owning a VWH as well someday.

If you are into pinching harmonics off everyonote on the fretboard, a hot pickup will certainly help.

I prefer the DBK in looks and tone, and when someday I own a Jem it will certainly be a DBK.
