Post Disappearing Pyramids disappear?!

Hey there,

I wonder how this can happen to the Inlays? It's the second time I see this on a 777LNG. I thought the Pyramids are some kind of paper under a plastic cover so I don't get it how they rub away.

Have a look.

Any ideas?

grüße (:

Re: Disappearing Pyramids disappear?!

It definitely didn't rub away. I suspect someone at some point thought they could pop the whole thing out with a knife or something and this is the result.

Re: Disappearing Pyramids disappear?!

It's probably from some sort of fretboard "cleaner" that soaked down under the inlay and dissolved it.

Well, I think it's broken too, I asked the owner, let's see what he says.

Stay tuned.

Re: Disappearing Pyramids disappear?!

It doesn't look like an original Ibanez fretboard. The low E is too close to the edge. The frets don't look right to me either.

if I look at my DSY under a similar angle, there is way more room on the bass side.

As the inlay is set in epoxy, there is no way it could soak down, the sides are sealed, unless it was a poorly done replica or someone wrecked it, during a refret.

Okay, the mystery is revealed. He said that it took of over the years.

That is correct, over the years a few pieces took of, maybe because of warmth the glue became soft and something fell of.

Re: Disappearing Pyramids disappear?!

it looks like somebody has "cleaned" the fretboard at the same time as doing a refret. I think the inlays should be thicker (deeper) than they seem from the pictures. It looks like someone took off a couple of millimeters of fretboard!! Then, there wasn't enough depth to the inlay "sockets" to keep them in!

I agree, if you take the sidedots as references, we are missing about 2mm of fretboard (1/12th IN) makes the scallops look strange as well...

Re: Disappearing Pyramids disappear?!

Actually looking at the pictures again, someone's taken so much wood from the fingerboard that the top few frets are almost not scalloped on the low E side! There seems to be more pronounced scalloping on the high E though (that may be an optical illusion!)
I think the inlays have just been rubbed through when someone was flattening the fingerboard fro a fret dress.

Re: Disappearing Pyramids disappear?!

Looks like the board has been too much sanded!!! Take a look...
On the low E side it was sanded deeper, so, the inlays were "sanded away".

Anyone agree?
