Dream Guitar finally obtained. Evo Experience content.

Sorry for the late post but finally obtained my dream guitar, which is Jem 7v that is signed by Steve Vai himself.

I know it's not that big of a deal over there but where I am, which is in the tiny island of Singapore, it is pretty rare that he ever comes down here. So on March 21st, Steve Vai came down here for a concert in which I also took part in the Evo experience. For those considering going for this, my advise is go. It is well worth it. Not only did I gain insight on playing the guitar and also I finally got the question of Ebony and Rosewood answered.

Steve Vai was also kind enough to autograph some of my other stuff, although I did not manage to get my whole collection signed. I am still happy enough to have these signed.

I also had a "weird" request. That is to have Steve Vai to write Evo on one of my Jems. He graciously replied "I would love to", no pun intended. He wrote it upside down although I will not question why.

And not to mention, a picture with the man himself.

That being said, the concert was an awesome concert.

Another thing that made my night was that, I was being chosen by Steve to go up stage for the audience taking part performance.

That is the greatest thing that had happened and is totally unforgettable.

Another pic of Steve holding one of my Jems.

Great! I experienced his experience back in 2000. Was good back then too.

What did he say about ebony?

That's awesome man congrats on the experience of a lifetime

Also is it just me or does Steve look the healthiest he's looked in a long time in that pic?

That is mind blowing! I would think it's even rare in LA that a person gets that type of access and jams with him on stage. It's great when a celebrity is so gracious with their time. Once a friend of mine wanted to have Salvador Dali sign a litho but instead the master went all crazy and did a full on art piece in the margins with a pencil. The litho suddenly went up in value a gazillion times! If I were a celebrity I would sign everything in sight knowing that the fan appreciation is the reason I got to where I am.

Re: Dream Guitar finally obtained. Evo Experience content.

I went ahead and asked Steve on why did he chose Rosewood in the end instead of keeping Jem 7v Ebony. The answer I've gotten from him was actually shocking.

He explained that he couldn't tell the difference between Ebony and Rosewood fingerboard. What he looked for in the neck was a wood that rings the same note when he knocks on it with Evo's body and the neck must feel right in his hands (Shape and thickness).

When Ibanez made him the replacement necks, the one that felt right just happened to be the one with rosewood, which was a Jem 555 neck at that time. After the Jem 555 neck got replaced with another Jem 7V neck, Ibanez just made a rosewood one for him anyway.

Steve also mentioned that he can't tell the type of wood on his fingerboard and the tonal properties of the fingerboard doesn't affect him.

Hope I did not burst any bubbles on the myth surrounding Steve's guitars .....

HAHA good to know I'm like Steve in one regard... I can't tell the difference between Rosewood and Ebony boards when I'm playing either

Add in Bubinga to that list as well... the only wood I really don't seem to get along with on a fretboard is Maple... I love the way it looks, but just don't like playing on it for some reason, I honestly can't tell you what it is either...

Me neither actually. They just feel like raw wood to me.

I like Maple if it is satin finished or oiled finished. If it's lacquer glass finish, I hate it.

Wow....I never would have thought that. It's not often I find a rosewood board that I enjoy. If I do, it's on a guitar that's been played quite a bit. While I do prefer the 'snap' ebony gives, the sound of the wood comes in 2nd to the feel. Smooth ebony beats everything for me, including maple.

Since I play mostly unplugged I hear the difference between fretboard woods. The ebony does have that snap over rosewood in feel and unplugged sound, but when I plug stuff in then any difference that was there was disappears. It's all about the pickups, effects, and amp at that point.

When I turn up, then it's all about controlling the amp and getting it to mix with other instruments in room and then that's the big battle. The type of fretboard wood is the last factor going. I would suspect a guy like Steve with all his big amps and effects would not be overly concerned with fretboard wood as the other stuff he has going colors his sound much, much more. I am sure there's some sensitive instrument/gadget that could detect the slightly added highs an ebony fretboard will give a note over rosewood when it's all plugged in and put up to volume, but it's probably miniscule.

Steve Vai can't hear woods?!?!? What a loser! He clearly is not the guitarist I thought he was.
