Early discoloration on JEM 777 30'ies?

I installed Dimarzio straplocks yesterday, and when I removed the original straplocks I noticed that it was quite a different color where the felt washer covered.

Is this color difference due to a reaction to the felt washer, or is it just discoloring elsewhere due to light/better air circulations/whatever?

It appears that the rest of the guitar is yellowing somewhat. How do you store the guitar?

Is been stored in the case waiting for me to set it up. Well a couple of days in my living room as well, out of direct sunlight though.

I like where the discoloration is going though. A little less green from what my manual white balance setting can tell :-)

this clearly looks like a reaction to the pressure & felt on the paint/finish. It seems inadequately cured so i'd keep the straplocks off for a while myself as the axe now has a major blemish. maybe it will revert (unlikely0.

new 30s can't have it's clearcoat "yellow" that fast.

Woooops, discoloring under the straplock felt is a major blemish? :-D

I really dont worry (yet!), as both my 30'ies are players. They will get worse over the years. I'll take a sneak peek under the LNG straplock tonight.

I guess the SK owner will need to get their guitars stored in light free, argon gas container :-)

Wait till you take the truss cover off, they're all stuck on.

I just checked on my 30thDY, and nothing like yours. Same color as the rest of the body.

Mine's sitting on a stand when it's not being played, no direct sunlight though, and has been for 4 months.

I wonder about this discoloration of yours. Some "solvent" on the washer ?

Re: Early discoloration on JEM 777 30'ies?

I just pulled one of the strap pins off my SK and no color difference, but the surface isn't smooth, like they assembled it before the clearcoat was completely cured. That could explain the truss covers being stuck on as well.

The clear is never completely cured on assembly. Check under every pickguard, every cover, 1987 or 2017, always the same. Clear can take months to completely cure.

Fair enough but I've never seen this with strap pin felts before.

Re: Early discoloration on JEM 777 30'ies?

I just removed the truss rod cover. Same thing there.

The guitar was bought second hand from a decent guy, but the previous guitar I bought from him was almost new as well but had yellowed frets that just needed a light polishing. Must be something with the way he store his guitars :-)

Does this applies to Jem 30 only? My 655 doesn't have that problem.

You 655 will have contact impressions under pickguard and truss cover.

Re: Early discoloration on JEM 777 30'ies?

It looks like the area around the strap pin hole has been chiseled out or something. That (and the half-cured clear coat) makes me wonder about the quality control of these 3000 dollar guitars.

No Rich, I have taken the truss rod cover several times for adjustment. It was fine. Same thing for my 550 Genesis.

As for the area under the pickguard, the only minor problem when I removed it was the mirror coating on the underside of the pickguard is marred.
