Ever play without the nut locked down?

Using it as a regular nut? I have been lately and I'm toying with the idea of a regular nut and locking tuners or at the very least, the tuners. It seems to have a different feel to clamped down, and I dig it. I like trems but I'm not really a heavy user, so maybe that's why.

Or is it just me?

Well, vibrations transfer through the headstock from the strings when the locking nut isn't clamped down, but when it is, it stops the vibration from the strings going to the head. My guess is that when you have it down, more vibrations go all over the neck, instead, maybe even to the body, resulting in possibly better tone.

Chris Broderick does it, doesn't he?

Re: Ever play without the nut locked down?

I use one of my Ibanez that way. I go Dropped-D occasionally with it so I just leave the pads and nuts off all together. I don't notice any difference in tone and I don't really use the trem at all either. I do notice a looser feel to bending and it only makes sense, I suppose.
The MMJPM has the config you're thinking about and I haven't played anything smother than my JP6.

Re: Ever play without the nut locked down?

I found that my guitar goes out of tune pretty quickly if I don't have the nut locked.
