EVOS action

The picture on vai.com showing evos action at the 12th fret appears to be quite high especially for my taste. I had no clue Vai liked action so high. I guess it does help with having an all around cleaner smoother sound though

Yeah. I think a lot of the pros prefer a higher action because of good tone. I heard that Malmsteen uses a very high action, too, to get his tone.

The action on my Strat's about that high. That's what surprised me when I saw it. It doesn't feel all that bad actually.

Jems aren't designed for ultra low action. They're designed for great playability. And that's true.

I've heard that Vai's EVO action is about 4,5 mm, low E at 24th fret, but i can be wrong... I think Rich has more detailed information about this...

When I saw him close it looked like 4mm to me, of course that's a guestimate from 5 feet away, but high it is

After watching that picture I fell really different with my own jem!!! More confident ... The man himself has a High action , So my 1.5mm action on my low E (fret 14) is not so high.

Yeah, I thought that was weird too. I was surprised to see how high the action appeared since a lot of folks whole like JEMS and similar-styled guitars like it lower. Actually, from how it appeared on that photo you saw, looks like how I usually set mine. It's still fairly low so I'm not tripping over strings and overexerting myself yet high enough to reduce the buzz enough.

I have met Vai a few times but one of these days I have to "meet" his gear and take some notes.

which reminds me of all those people that think that lowest action is the best and that buying a 7vwh will make u Vai. regardless of what tell you, a regular 7vwh is not as "rounded up" as a guitar that vai regularly uses, although yeah it does come close.

i haven't been playing very long but i'm already way past the point where i set the action so low that it almost plays automatically

those quick smooth tone transitions are almost impossible with a superlow action, its not a matter of skill anymore.

and yeah malmsteen uses a really high action which is also kind of too high for my taste but hey every artist has their trademark ways of setting up their gear. but it indeed does puzzle me why evo doesnt use the same trem.

another thing

you can measure the action on Evo in the "all about evo" section
just measure what scale it is compared to the real neck and then its easy to calculate pretty accurately. zoom it a bit. i havent bothered yet
too bad the 24th fret is a bad pic to measure.... would be good to check

According to guitar player magazine (or guitar world) Nuno bettencourt has a high action too... Something > 2.5 mm... So it's like Vai and Y. M. !!!! It completly changes my vision of a good "set up" for a guitar!!!

Doesn't Satch have guitars with avery low action specifically for songs with a lot of tapping in them?
