An extra 1K or so ... Does it really worth it?

Hi there,

I'm from the old RG school ;o) Planning to upgrade my old RG270. Say whatever you want, but it was not bad, pal. So, I'm checking out the RG1570, S470 and the one and only S2170. They all rock. Still, I have been tempted to put my hands on this white jem of Steve's. Yeah, fells good -not as goos as the S Series, though. Sounds very powerful and should I say, 'precise'?

Still, I'm thinking: If I get those Evo pickups and a RG1570, who can tell the difference? With the extra cash -which is more than 1K!- I can spend some 'quality time' on a resort or something?

Now, am I right or wrong pals? Help me out here!

Thanks

Well of course there are some differences, the Jem is made of alder and the RG is made of basswood plus is rear routed, you can check out the RG2550 it's more like a jem (front routed).

Personally if you want to save money i would go for a used RG5xx (550, 570 etc) and then upgrade te pickups... You get an equally good guitar (some on this forum would even say a beter guitar) for way less money.

And the S series are cool too i think that's your first desicion to make: S or RG... and boy it's a hard one

Anyway good luck!

Joe

Re: An extra 1K or so ... Does it really worth it?

The main difference is quality of materials and attention to detail. The RG270 is just machine made sprayed and packaged from fairly cheap materials, this does not automatically make it rubbish, but its not as good as the JEM by a long way.

The JEM has a nice hand finished neck with a thin satin finish, the rosewood is much higher grade so gives a warmer sound and softer feel with no grittyness when bending. The trem is better (unless they all have the fancy edge on now of course!) and the electronics are better shielded and the 5 way switch is a much better quality.

Really, I have to agree with joejoe and old RG550/750 with new pickups will sound much better than any 1550 type you can get today.

If you like the S series why not grab an old Gambale signature model? It's a higher quality version of the same thing for about the same price these days, at the end of the day it's a question of choice, the JEM is leagues better quality (turn up the amp and you will hear the difference) but if you want a good solid functional no flash looking guitar the RG550/750 is superb and the paint is less easy to chip!
