A few questions about Vai and EVO.

Hey all,

I have a few questions regarding Steve Vai and his main axe, EVO.

1. When did Vai begin using EVO? How old is it?
2. Before he aquired EVO, what was Vai's main guitar?
3. What's his main 7-string nowadays? Does he still use the UV GMC that's on the cover of Passion & Warfare? I know that was his main 7-string for a while.

Answers/opinions greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Smithy (Shredder87)

Re: A few questions about Vai and EVO.

I think Evo dates from 92/93. The 7VWH was in the 93 Catalogue and Vai did the promo work for Sex and Religion with the guitar in Summer 03 as Evo was the prototype it's probably a little bit older than the production guitars.

His main guitar was an old Charvel Green Meanie, then I believe he flitted with various custom guitars by "Performance" on tour with DLR before moving on to the JEMs until the Whitesnake album and tour with a variety of Universes, swirls standard finishes and stage finishes (such as the mirroball one). Then he used a PBK and a GMC at Expo 92 in Spain, before Evo appeared.

I dunno what his main 7 is now, I haven't seen one for ages

I "think" this is the right info, others may be able to correct me.

Re: A few questions about Vai and EVO.

During Zappa's tour, Vai used a simple Stratocaster (also in flexable)...
In official Steve Vai site there are a lot of info about evo...maybe a evo mini-site!

Re: A few questions about Vai and EVO.

He had other Jems before Evo.... I don't think he had a particular favorite until Evo came along though...

Re: A few questions about Vai and EVO.

Oddly enough one of his main guitars early on was a VDY (Dave Lee Roth - Skyscraper era) - not surprising I suppose, as even though a lot of folks here think they are butt-ugly, they feel fantastic......
