Getting a guitar autographed by Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Steve Morse?

Hey guys,

I'm seriously considering buying a VIP ticket for their G3 Tour, so I can get a photograph, quick meet and an autographed item. I was planning on getting my JEM7V autographed.

My questions to you guys are: Where would you have them autograph it? The front? The back? Only pickguard / trem and control covers? Back of the headstock?

Also, if I were to get these autographs, how could I protect them? I read about clear coat and such, but how do I do that?

Also, is it really smart to take a guitar to G3? I'd have to hold on to it all show I think (not sure if it's before or after the show).

Thanks!
Jimmy

I would think the VIP session is before the show. After the show the old guys are tired and need some sleep.

Every "VIP" arrangement I've been on, Dream Theater, Vai, Gilbert and Morse, has been before the show. If you got a hotel nearby you can most likely walk back with the guitar before the show starts. For some of these VIP meetings, you have to go outside anyway.

Anyway, if you can afford it, go for it. And bring your guitar.

Very cool. I say bring your guitar and have them sign the back of the headstock. Anywhere else typically de-values the instrument, as not many people want a sig on the face. (I guess the only exception to that rule are the old 777LG's and new EVO's that come factory-signed on the back of the body). You also don't need to worry about clearcoat or protection on the back of the headstock, as it won't come into contact with anything during play/storage and should last forever.

Yep, I was planning on the back of the headstock as well. But I doubt three signatures will fit there, that's my problem. I won't resell this guitar, ever. My parents paid part of my JEM, it will stay with me forever. So resale value isn't really a problem. I'm not sure if I want anything on the front of the guitar though. It looks amazing as-is.

Well a big question is do you plan on continuing to play it after its signed? Or retire it as a show piece? If you want to keep playing it you have to be very strategic about where it gets signed or the signatures can get rubbed off. I have heard of people having their body cleared over the top of the signature to protect it but with very mixed results. If you go with a replaceable piece such as the trem cavity cover or pickguard, you can pull it off & replace it keeping the signatures mint, but can always put it back on if you want to. I think this is what most guys do when they plan on playing the guitar, I think (or back of the headstock like previously mentioned).

For myself I just get the trem cavity cover signed. I have a nice collection of them going now...

I would go for the back of the headstock, its probably best because you may want to sell the guitar in the future, also it wont wear away either.

I will play it after it's signed. If it was just Steve (Vai), I'd just pick headstock and go for it. The problem it's Steve, Joe AND Steve. For there are 3, I thought it may be cool to have the 3 of them sign the back of my guitar. I just don't know how to protect it afterwards.

Also, golden sharpie on a VWH... ;D?

Re: Getting a guitar autographed by Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Steve Morse?

I read that Steve Vai had Les Paul sign Evo, twice.

First one wore off and the second time he covered it with clear plastic. I don't know if it's still there now, but it's a way to go to protect it if you don't want to go the whole of clear coating it.

Other than that, I second the vote for the spring cover. Easy to take off/replace/protect/store.

Plus; you don't even have to bring the whole guitar to the show.

Just bring the cover.

You could also use the search feature--there's an older thread covering this topic with great suggestions.

Could you link me? I tried to search on 'protect autograph / signature', 'signed / autographed guitar' and it didn't really come up with anything.

3 sigs would fit that'd be really cool on the back of headstock

Re: Getting a guitar autographed by Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Steve Morse?

My suggestion would be to not have them sign it at all. Signatures are only cool if it's a limited production guitar, like the JEM777LNG or the new EVO replica. On any other guitar, signatures just lower the value of the guitar.

If I absolutely had to have a guitar autographed, I'd have it done on the trem cover on the back, so that you could replace it with a non-signed cover if needed.

3 sigs are pretty much if you want it on the front of the body but 1 would do. I got mine on the front but my body has no paint coat so it doesn't wear as much as it does with normal coats.

Only sign a guitars body if you plan on keeping it until you die, cause only then will it slightly help increase its value :P

Just take a rear cavity plate, get em all to sign it. That way you can put it on any guitar you like, and you dont have the SHLEPP your guitar to the show :P
