I've lived in Nagoya for 12 years, japan 13, just got my PR back in November. I still miss Oita, the best place in Japan, hands down.

Hard for me to pick a favorite out of Oita, Saga, Yamaguchi, Yamanashi, Tochigi, Nagano, Iwate, Okayama and Ibaraki but Kyushu definitely rates high for me too.

Oita is the reason I fell in love with Japan and decided to move here, 17 years ago. It has a very deep connection for me.

My friend lives right at the bottom of the hill from the castle ruins (park now) in Usuki and I always insist on going up there and also for miso ice cream at Kani Shouyu when I go there.

Wow nice. I've been to Usuki castle ruins before, LONG time ago though. We passed by Keiko's (Singer from Globe)'s parents house or something on the way there.

I think I remember Seiji saying something about that. If you ever go again, find the Kani Shouyu shop and try their miso soft ice cream. It sounds horrible, but it's so good we go for it every time, at least once.

The last time I was there I got to play in both Oita and Usuki. Can't wait to go again...

Re: The Great White Jem Debate of 2019

Back to guitars....anyone start a list of differences between the MIJ & MII Jems (apart from manufacturing location of course)?

Rosewood vs ebony
Scalloped frets vs not (based on pictures only)
6105 frets vs ?
Hard shell vs gig bag
Ultralight trem bar vs standard

What else? Please correct me if I'm wrong with the above stuff as well.

Fretboard:

. Japan- rosewood, radius 430 mm
. Indo- Ebony, radius 400 mm

Hardware (except the edge):

Machine heads, retaining bar, screws, etc... no Japan/Gotoh manufacturer.

So you buy the indo, make sure it's in good condition and not a lemon, then replace the parts and then you basically have an MIJ jem for WAY below the cost of an MIJ jem... problem is finding one that is NOT a lemon...

To me the only downside is not having scalloped high frets. But being a long-time RG guy that's NBD. It is a nice feature though.

Thats a good point, but would you actually want the indo guys doing the scalloping? Oh god, dont scare me.

You'd do it on the CNC at the same time as the inlay routing, not by hand.

I wonder when that became a CNC operation? Because if you've seen an old square heel Jem, that's clearly not a CNC process.
