Power 540. Look at the picture of Satriani holding the same guitar (and wearing the same clothes) in the 1988 Ibanez catalog:

I remember hearing Joe only posed with a pro line (guitar in picture) for promotion purposes only, and still used a radius to record.

He's playing that on the Satch Boogie video? I didn't know that. Cool.

Actually Joe recorded "Not Of This Earth" prior to hooking up with Ibanez; the original 1986 version went out-of-print pretty quickly but was reissued by Relativity Records with that cover in 1988 after "Surfing With The Alien" sold so well.

I'll have to pull out an old Guitar Player magazine from my "archives" (as my wife calls them) to verify, but I believe both "Not Of This Earth" and "Surfing With The Alien" were recorded using home-made strat-types. Steve Via helped get Joe on-board as an endorser but it happened after "Surfing" was recorded but before he did the promotional shots and "Satch Boogie" video.

Speaking of rare Satriani guitars, I've always liked the guitar used in the "Big Bad Moon" video - if you look closely it's not a Chrome Boy but a bronze S/S/H Radius.

Ahh - that's right, I forgot about the Kramer on "Not Of This Earth". I'll check my old Feb. 1988 GP; I think it shows the parts guitars he put together right before he got the Ibanez deal; I thought they were used for recording "Surfing" but maybe they were only for the magazine photo shoot (which, given their lead times, was probably done in October 1987).

Re: Guitar on the cover of "Not of this earth"

I pulled out the old magazine; according to Joe he got the black Ibanez that he scribbled on with metallic markers (is that "Black Dog"? Joe doesn't have his old guitars on his site like Via does) after "Surfing" was finished; he used parts guitars to record the album. Joe is pictured with one of the parts guitars, which sported an Ibanez neck, and the black Ibanez in the article. The parts guitar is called an "Ibanez prototype" in the cover shot caption (listed on the index page) but the body is definitely a full-sized typical Strat body, front routed with a clear pickguard - which is what leads me to believe it is a parts guitar with a prototype neck by Ibanez.

Edited to add:
The inside front cover of this issue is the 540 Power ad featuring Joe, and it has an inset picture of the original album cover for "Not Of This Earth".

I did not know that an HSS Goldboy existed; it always looked bronze on our tv screen and I just assumed that it was a custom finished Radius since it was HSS instead of HH. I don't have the video; I only saw it a couple of times on MTV (god I'm old; I remember when MTV only played music videos) and couldn't get close enough to see if the jack was moved from the Radius location to the JS location. Do you know where any pictures might still exist?
