Guitar on Fire Strings poster.

Anyone ever seen that guitar before? Looks awesome, with the leaves and no vine from what I can see.

That's EVO, and has been Steve's main guitar for 8 years or so. I believe that the neck pictured is from a JEM555, but I can't really tell for sure. The vine is definitely there-it's just hard to see in the pic (although, if it IS the 555 neck that was on EVO, the inlay only covers the fingerboard up to the 12th fret.)

Considering it says EVO right where it should I think we've all seen it before The vine is there of course, photography plays many tricks.

Doesn't appear to be a 555 neck, though. Definitely a 7V neck. The dark lighting and Vai's position dosen't allow the light to hit the rest of the fingerboard.

it is in fact a 555 neck because he accidentaly broke the original neck onstage somwhere. I read it on his site.

yeah, look at the first fret, it has leaves and on a 555 neck there's no leaves.

I agree with Rich, it's his new rosewoodneck.

OK lets clear this up... this IS a new neck for EVO. In no way is that a 555 neck unless serious alterations were done. I believe this is the history of the EVO necks:

1. Original EVO neck - 1992?-1993?
2. New Neck with black headstock around 1997 (broke)
3. Newest neck with Rosewood fingerboard and white headstock - 2002 (replaced)

#2 was put on because he busted it on stage after a show while throwing it in to the guitar tech. The cord was still plugged in. Go to Vai.com and look in his guitar gallery and you'll see.

I cannot say the reason for this new neck though, but perhaps Vai like Rosewood fingerboards now and who can blame him? Rosewood rocks!

can't really tell from the picture if it's rosewood or not, but damn, ebony is where it's at!

First- cool new message board. use to go one old one but i have new e-mail so I have a new account.

ABOUT this guitar. I've seen a bigger picture of it and you can see that the marker was rubbed off and evo was placed in its placed, maybe he didn't have evo at the time of the photo.

It IS EVO. The 'Konx' notation in masking tape by the neck pickup is a dead giveaway. Plus, I'm sure Evo has been renamed many times. Lettering has a habit of wearing off if the guitar is played, used and abused as much as Evo has been.

This is true. I have seen the lettering on EVO in different states of boldness.

What actually makes Evo, Evo anymore? Is it just the body that is original?

Can someone do a full EVO history. As in how it started as a normal 7vwh, and over the years turned into how she is today??

later
