Guitar Retainer/Tree

Hey guys. A long time ago I bought a JEM7VWH. When I got it there was no retainer/tree on the headstock. It has locking nuts and locking tuners but would you guys suggest getting one?

If you've had it for years without issue I wouldn't worry about it. But if you want one, see the (Ibanez Rules) swirly banner up top I keep forgetting we have 2 swirly banners now

Re: Guitar Retainer/Tree

Well I never had my guitar properly set up to a way I like it. I was thinking maybe this would help a bit.

Re: Guitar Retainer/Tree

I don't think its presence or absence would really make much a difference to the guitar's setup, being that it's behind the locking nut. I suppose you could look for a generic RG one in the classifieds and if you like or see an improvement you could get a gold one from Rich, or just get one from Rich.

Right now I've got a 7VWH and a Jackson SL1 within a few feet of me, and both have locking nuts and tilt back headstocks. Only the Ibanez has the tree, and both play equally well and are equally well setup. Perhaps you need to venture off the coast and get someone to give that guitar a good setup for you?

Re: Guitar Retainer/Tree

Do you have quite a bit of buzzing playing unplugged? Strumming or playing on the thicker strings?

Re: Guitar Retainer/Tree

Nope. I did when I first got the Jackson, but it just needed a nut shim and then it was fine after that.

Re: Guitar Retainer/Tree

That's weird. I have a nut shim already. Maybe another would help?

Re: Guitar Retainer/Tree

I guess it couldn't hurt if the original shim wasn't thick enough, especially if it is buzzing on the first fret.

Re: Guitar Retainer/Tree

it has no effect on sustain at all.

I use it to keep the strings from rising off the nut on the way to the tuners.

I find that without the string tree the strings get loosened/tightened a lot more as you tighten up the nut.
