Hamand: Practicing & Developing - In responce to hamand's po

I usually practice an hour or so a day. Usually a bit more. I havn't had time to practice as much due to school and work and everything. One thing I do find very difficult is legato playing. That seems to be the hardest thing for me. As far as practicing, I try and concentrate on bits and pieces of certain songs, that concentrate on certain techiques. Like that middle part of Metropolis part on, from my site. That has a lot of hand movments. Up and down the neck (develops aim, as I like to call it and the 2nd part of Metropolis, that climactic ending, was difficult for me to learn. After a while the tab just looked all the same to me. But I took it piece by piece and eventually got it all.

Hamand: Practicing & Developing

Without sounding like a Vulcan: "fascinating".

Thanks for the post. I listened to the Netherlands Vai webcast interview in which he talked about virtuosity, but he kinda glossed over his own development. I'm curious as to when the "switch" occurs. i.e. when he/you went from inability to shredability.
I know it's not like "I woke up today and I can suddenly play" but you've chosen some pretty complex material to pursue - did you notice the improvement in e.g. your aim or were you so inspired by Petrucci that it just had to be done? Or did you start off playing "jingle bells" etc?

Regardless, keep up the playing. You rock.

Hamand: Practicing & Developing

to hamand: I live on Long Island, where I'm sure most of you know is where John Petrucci grew up (Kings Park to be exact). I take lessons at Lussos Guitars (www.lussos.com) in Miller Place. My former teacher (who unfortunatly left due to his full time job), was a student of Petrucci's, and became good friends with him. He used to tell me a lot of cool stories about what John and stuff back in the day, so to speak. My former teacher dosen't see him anymore, cause John is a pretty busy guy. But they do keep in contact, which is pretty cool.
