Question Help me choosing between these two used Jems

Hey everyone,

I'm strongly considering buying a Jem (I never had one, I own a '96 UV7BK though), and I found two guys who offered me two used Jems for a similar price. I can buy only one, and I can't test them in my hands because the guys live way too far.

I'm not a collector, I need a 6-string to be my workhorse, the guitar will be extensively played; I don't use the whammy bar much. So I'd like to collect some arguments here, any opinion is welcome. Which one would you choose, and why?

The first one is a 2009 model, which can be seen on this thread. I'm slightly inclined towards this one, because it's probably in better condition than the other one (13 years can't be ignored). However, I dislike the white-ish aspect fretboard scallops.

The second is a 1996 model, pictures below:

Before anything, I would ask to the 1996 one seller to fix the neck joint.
Unscrew a little and push the side of the neck to align the strings on the fretboard and then screw again.
You clearly see that the high E string is near out...

If he does not want to do that and send pics of the fixed alignment that would indicate a possibly warped neck.

just my two cents.

Might just be the angle of the photo, though, no?

I prefer the older. I had a 95 and an 07 and 95 just sounded better, felt better quality.

But, considering the older jem posted, it has somewhat a major flaw...

IMO, the newer should be good

I'd lean towards the older one. Neck pocket alignment can be fixed.

Re: Help me choosing between these two used Jems

I prefer the feel of the one piece neck on the older ones as well as the ebony fretboard. On average, I would pick an older JEM over a newer one, but I think in this case, I would take the 09. That 96 is really showing its age. The gold hardware is very worn which, sight unseen, would make me wary of fret condition. The 09 is in very nice condition, and I would think it's a better deal since they're the same price.

Get older one. 2009 models have intonation issue. the older one seems to have the scallop touched up. I dun recall it looking so nice.
