Help me with my weird Jem!

Hello, i've just got my first Jem (2nd hand) but it seems a bit of an oddball and i wonder if any of you have any info on it? First odd bit is the jem logo, written in plain capitals the 'e' and 'm' are underlined. This logo is not listed in jemsite. Next, the logo positioning, not under the high e tuner, but between the b and e, also not on the site. The h-stock is black and the 'ibanez' and jem logo is in yellow, the ibanez logo written in outline only, again, unlike on jemsites examples. It has pyramid inlays like the 777DY, LNG, SP and is joined to the body with the old style neck joint- no serial no. anywhere. Oddest bit tho is that there is no monkey grip or lions claw. It sports the common old surface neck joint crack which makes me think these two bits were intended to go together. Obviously, she's pretty old (original edge trem). Blue and Green p'ups too. Any help or info appreciated, none of my local stores have a clue about it! Sounds kik'in tho! Thanks all :-)

Does it have a lion's claw trem routing? Could you get us a pic?

Sounds like someone has written JEM on the headstock of an RG

If you remove the neck you should find a stamp revealing the model designation.

No Monkey Grip+ no Lion's Claw= Not a JEM.

Somebody simply customized an RG. If you paid more than $350-400US for it, you paid too much

If it were a Vai prototype, it'd most likely have the Monkey Grip or Lion's Claw. Check out the prototypes on www.vai.com. Only the fixed bridge and purple/brown sunburst model don't have grips. If it were a "prototype" I'm sure it'd be pretty obvious Again...the suspicious logo is extremely suspect, but...pictures would certainly clear it up.

Just trying to "keep it real" and prevent any disinformation from being spread.

It's not a JEM, period.

Pictures needed,
get the neck off and put an end to the questions. it will be stamped with something inside on both the neck and the body.
any neckplate?
what colour is the body and the inlays?
fretboard wood type?
also where did you buy it? do you have a link?

hope we can help out a newcomer and welcome him into the lair.

OK, it seems that if the neck has pyramids it's a JEM neck...period. Unless it's a custom neck which is possible. So it's likely it's at least half a JEM:-)

Every actual JEM neck that I've seen has had a particular JEM logo.

Take a look here:
http://www.jemsite.com/axes/htm_features/headstock.htm

You find me a JEM headstock that is black, with a yellow logo and the "JEM" logo in plain lettering with the "E" & "M" underlined, and I'll buy into your theory that it's an actual JEM neck

Oh yeah...and are the 21-24th frets scalloped?

Now Chris, since I've owned most every JEM model that exists, I'll review them in my mind. Thanks for the link though

I'm just lifting up the possibility that it could indeed be a JEM neck. If the headstock has been altered or changed then I guess it could be 80% of a real JEM neck. You did know the headstock could be removed didn't you

And I hope you know I'm just trying to have some fun not to be argumentative or cause problems.

The only other reason I suspect it might have been a Jem neck was the it seems like whoever built this guitar was trying to emulate a JEM with the colored pups etc. I also recall that Ibanez blew out JEM necks to dealers without bodies a long time ago. So the mystery could have interesting roots.

I'm still sticking with it being a modified RG, neck & all. Regardless of what the neck is, it's NOT a JEM, no matter how liberal you'd like to be.

No way...the headstock can be removed? Really? Seriously? (duh)

Again...scalloped frets? Maple of rosewood board? And most of all...we need pictures! Only the owner can clear this up.

If the he'd pop the neck off, I'm sure all would be settled.

Yeah, all in all I guess your right. I'm leaning towards an RG given the information we have to date.
