How do you remove the volume and tone knobs from a Jem

I peeled the pickguard plastic off and some is stuck under them. Feels like I'm gonna break something if I keep pulling

...same as you would on any other guitar with plastic knobs--by very carefully prying them up and off. The volume and tone pot shafts are splined, that is why they feel tight.

Suggested tool to pry with? In 26 years of playing, I've never removed one on an Ibanez with the hat type knobs

That reminds me of a limeric.

The butler wants by,
With a glint in his eye,
And pops them back in with warm spoons.

(Les Dawson, some time in the 1980's)

No idea about the plastic nobs though.

Two lengths of string - each tucked under the knob on either side of the pot. Gently pull both strings at the same time.

I got the idea from working on cars. Using two spoons is the preferred method of popping the needles off of the gauge cluster to change out the face or take the thing apart to solder in different color LED's.

I tend to stick a pick under the edge, rotate the knob back and forth while angling the pick upward until it comes off... seems to work every time.

That's what I did. Worked like a charm. It was just so damn tight
