How are jem 20th bodies made? What are the swirls made of?

Just wondering how the Jem 20th bodies are made.
Process, materials, etc.
Tried searching but found nothing...
Input appreciated

I would think its acrylic slabs CNC'd to normal JEM specs, if i'm not mistaken. They would just use a different CNC bit, one meant for cutting plastic?

I'm a machinist by trade for over 20 years. My best guess is it's CNC machined but will leave a dull finish on the cut surfaces. Then they would put it in an oven at a particular temp and "melt " the outside which would then turn all the surfaces clear. My best guess. I've machined acrylic before and that's what we did.

Would they swirl it before they melted the outside? Or would they just swirl it after and clear coat it?

It's not swirled in the normal fashion, there are like 3 separate sets of swirls going through the body. Its in the body, not on it like traditional swirls. That's why I was curious, because the way it looks gives me no idea on how it was made. I just got one yesterday, and im perplexed lol

Maybe two parts of acrylic, the top one is mixed with that swirl.Swirl is inside of acrylic and not over it, I guess ....

My bet is the body is laminated acrylic sheets, similar to level 1 bullet resistant glass. They probably lay down one sheet of acrylic, put down some swirl color, another thin sheet of acrylic, more swirl color and so on. They'd probably heat the laminate body section so that they would melt together. Then the body would be routed, sanded, polished with a torch, then final polished by hand. I doubt it's resincast as that would probably sound like crap.

Dude, I bet it would be SWEET to make a custom 20th, exactly the same as the first,(MINUS THE SWIRL) BUT Instead shooting it with like a small caliber gun a few times at different angles (if the body holds up)
That would be one badass finish.

I have no idea how acrylic is worked. I figure at some point it has to be liquid though. My guess would be they were poured. It's the only way I can figure to keep any airpockets or bubbles out of it. Pour a layer, string on the veins, maybe they're even poured. Pour the second layer of clear, color, pour the third layer, let cool and CNC like it was anything else.

Only somebody that makes acrylic would really be qualified to answer though.

they melt it down and then someone is sick in the mixture then it dries.

Richs theory is along the same lines as what I was thinking. The swirls have got poured on each of the parts while the body is still semi melted, because the swirl veins aren't just paper thin lines, they actually are swirled about an inch in diameter on each layer. It's gotta be a strenous process

Red face Re: How are jem 20th bodies made? What are the swirls made of?

The acrylic was forced to endure long periods of time exposed to old Vai/Roth videos during a Clockwork Orange type of process! Afterward, of course the acrylic changed into a swirled combination of Vai rock star goodness...Then they just go ahead and machine it like normal!

If you watch all of these in a row, you'll actually start to swirl from the inside! It's amazing...

It's probably molded and the color veins are shot through it while it's still liquid.
