Ideal weight for an Alder Jem? Ideal weight for a Basswood Jem?

Do you guys have any opinion how weight affects the tone of a Jem?

Is heavier or lighter better?

Do you think that there's an ideal weight for an Alder Jem?

Do you think that there's an ideal weight for a Basswood Jem?

I've never even considered it by weight, I tend to do it by playability and tone.

Definitely Jono, weight should not really matter (within reason). Playability and tone is number one. Stop worrying about how much something weighs, and get out there and play.

Ive played heavy guitars that sounded good.....
and heavy guitars that sounded bad................
Same with light guitars, weight doesnt really mean much.
Its all the total package and the quality of the wood used.

I've got 2 PGM301s. As I recall one is around 8 lbs and the other is around 9 lbs. I never notice the difference in their weights unless I pick up one and then the other.

They both sound good yet slightly different. The heavier one sounds just a wee tiny bit brighter.

I'm new here and don't own a JEM...YET but I do know a thing or 2 about guitar weight. If you want to get a true perspective of weights of guitars, do what I do, play a bluegrass banjo for awhile that weighs a ton due to a massive bell-brass tone ring. After you do that pick up whatever guitar you want and it'll feel as light as a feather, I guarantee it! But I agree that tone is king and you learn to deal with the rest! Just my $.02 worth.

phew. 2 similar threads.

I'll just copy/paste my other response lol

e: Alder is a good sound, but incredibly light.

I have 1 basswood jem, and 1 alder jem. The basswood is about twice as heavy subjectively speaking. Sound similar enough, but the weight difference is kind of astonishing.

You should probably quote the guy that necrod it instead of picking at me.
