If you have both a JEM7DBK & JEM7BSB...

my question is for you,

my first jem will be either the bsb (evo pickups) or the dbk (breed ones).
i'm an huge vai fan since PAW album. i like tracks guitar "sound" like : animal, erotic n., i would love to, tender, bad horsies, etc... the steve vai sound.

of course steve vai play EVO which is an alder body with jem.
but between those 2 jem (same body but different pickups),

which one got the most proper sound, well definition note, precision, something... "whoaaaah that's it, that's steve vai touch"
which one is the best combination for this style of music (vai) :

" BREED & BASSWOOD or EVOLUTION & BASSWOOD " ??????????

so if you get those two model and if you compare, which one would you advise me ?

thanks.

manta.

The guitar Vai mostly uses is alder and evolutions. That being said, basswood is pretty close to alder in tone, so basswood and evolutions should get you there.

... but if your options are those axes, both are great; you are not going to fail with anyone. BSB has a raw tone and althought it has evos the sound is quite different from vwh, 90th ham but the sound is huge and I like it a lot; anyway I do prefer the dbk due to its ultrathin neck and the breeds had a great rock tone. Both impressive!

If your fingers dont know what they are doing you, can have all the Jems ever released and your still going to sound like ****..

Pic the guitar that gives you the biggest boner, and if you can play like vai, it will shine through that guitar...

Good luck

If its the tone from the PAW era then you'll need a Jem fitted with Paf Pros as thats what he was using then. As I recall the UV wasn't in use when the tacks were recorded but was put on the cover of the album. Evos didn't come out till 1992 and Breeds came out much later than that.

Umm. Several songs on the paw album have a 7 string in them... it was made just before that album. I could've swore he had it during whitesnake as well.

Re: If you have both a JEM7DBK & JEM7BSB...

Thanks a lot guys for your advise,

but some jem owners sy that EVO pickups in a basswood body sound too high, too much gain... there guitar scream more than they rock !

is it true ? my problem is that those 2 jem BSB and DBK are not in the same place so i will not try them in same gear, you know ?

if it may help your advice i put the 2 original UV blaze pickups in a 7620 and wooooooooooaaaaaa, i f***ing love that definition and precision. How to get this same felling : evo or breed in basswood jem ?

Re: If you have both a JEM7DBK & JEM7BSB...

... personally, I'm happy with the Paf Pro neck + Evo Bridge combo in my 777VBK; "old school" + "new school" instant-Vai tone in one package... or as close one can get :P

Does it have to be Breed OR Evo sets? You can try looking into these combinations:
Breed Neck + Evo (B)
Breed Neck + Evo II
Paf Pro (N) + Breed Bridge

if ya dig the Blaze's in your 7620, maybe a Steve's Special in the bridge?
