If you were going to part together a JEM where would you start?

I'd like a JEM to Ibanez spec. I could just buy a JEM, but black or white is not quite what I want. I'd like something a little more off beat. Assembling is appealing, too. I simply enjoy it.

Any tips on where to begin?

Well, the neck is going to be the most important part. You need to at least have an original Ibanez neck. Original Ibanez hardware is easy enough to find used or new. Also, you can find a replacement body in nearly any wood you like pretty cheap and paint it to whatever you like. Pickups are also personal preference.

Put up a WTB thread in classifieds for neck/hardware and keep an eye out on ebay. Or, just buy a guitar from Livewire Guitars.

JEMs come in many different colors and designs, what color or design are you interested in?

Are Mai Guitar or PCGuitars reputable at all? They sell replacement parts on eBay

I bought a really nice one piece swamp ash jem body from Maiguitars on ebay. Everything was pretty much perfect on it, just had to finish sand and it was good to go. All the routes and holes lined up perfectly.

I built my own neck for it and ended up with a sweet guitar

Edit: if you need anything for a Jem just ask sebastian, he has a room full of Jems and enough parts to build another room full

I had a VERY early Mai ash bodied 565 that was pretty nice. The recesses for the cavity covers were too big for the original covers, but I think he addressed that problem long ago.

PCG is Nate Perle. I've been to Nate's shop a couple of times and can tell you with absolute certainty that he is the real deal. He has a custom, made to spec, CNC that puts out perfectly accurate bodies and necks. Of course, if you buy a bare body you'll have to do the final sanding, but this is standard practice for all builders.

Nate also has an immense selection of finished necks in a crazy amount of different options. IMO, his necks are better than original Ibanez stock....... they're that good.

See my post above.

Either Mai or PCG will do a complete build for you if your willing to pay for it. Everything I've seen from Mai has been very good. The only reason I sway toward PCG is that I've held many examples in my hand, scrutinized them, measured them, and played them. Nate really is building great guitars and parts.

I picked up a Charvel Fusion Custom a few months back. It's pretty cool imo. Didn't pay near what they list for on ebay. It's all stock as far as I can tell. I wonder if you would be better off in the long run to pick up a used RG that is close to the Jem you want. Do you have a Jem in mind that you are gonna mod after?
