Re: interested in a universe
I've got one, it's an older model, a '99 UV777BK with a new old school lo-pro bridge. I had to special order one through my local store since not too many peeps were crazy about 7 stringers then. I got really sick of the cheap looking plastic mirror pickguard, and to warrant my need to change it, my then guitar tech decided to break the damn thing by over-tightening the pickguard screws.
So I got a custom made stainless steel mirrored pickguard made. I got it done really really cheap, about 80 Singapore dollars at the time. All I did was hand him my old plastic mirror and he just programmed his computerised laser cutter and voila! Stainless Steel UV Pickguard! And this was done at a place specialising in custom signages.
I decided to keep the pickups stock, the blazes aren't too bad. Most say they are muddy or whatever, but changing the pickups just aren't going to give you that definition you're looking for. I feel it's due to the fact that most guitar amps are just not made for you to play that low B. It's all a matter of tweaking, you'll get the tone you seek. What I did is got my tech to wire in some new capicitors giving the guitar a slight boost in the hi-mids and lo-mids.
She's an amazing guitar. I have no regrets whatsoever about buying her, but honestly speaking they vary from instrument to instrument. You just have to find one you're really comfortable with.
