JS Custom

Hello Everyone,

I'm new at this fabulous forum. This is my first post.

A week ago, I bought my first JS guitar. I immediately fell in love with it, but as the one I bought it from was not the first owner, I have no idea how old it could be.

Perhaps you could help me.
I will describe its specs:

Color: TB or BTB
Pick-ups: HSH-configuration: DiMarzio Paf Pro (neck), DiMarzio single coil (middle) and DiMarzio Fred (bridge) (So it has a five-way switch)
Body: Basswood
Tremolo: EDGE (open at back side)
21st fret inlay: JS Custom
Neck Plate number: 004239, made in Japan
Headstock: JS Series written on it, but no number

Please help me. Already after one week I am so fond of this guitar that I really want to know everything about it.

Congrats with your new guitar, and welcome to this fine, humble forum...

The "JS Custom" inlays makes it a JS700 made in Japan. JS700 was also maed in Korea, but they had "Joe Satriani" as inlay. The japanese made is generally speaking higher ranking than the korean made ones.

The two first digits in serialnumber says 00, then it's a 2000 model. As far as I can tell. But I can't remember JS700 being made after 1997... So I can't really say for sure.

Yeah, I forgot that one... I don't think any JS1 had a plaque inlay. It could be a modded JS body or a custom body of some sort.

Ok. I've never heard about a JS1 like that. Would the serial also fit in with it being a JS1? Any pics or more info about the limited numbered JS1 models? Rich?

The 700 never had a Floyd, right?

I've seen the BTB js with a plaque before in H-S-H config. It was a aftermarket mod. You didn't by any change got this one in Holland?

The plaque was introduced in 94 on the JS1000 and 6000. The JS1000 was, in that year and that year alone I beleive, offered in TB Trans blue (without the burn) but this was a HH configuration.

The BTB's have all, as far as I'm aware been HH too.

I'm thinking it's an aftermarket installation of the middle pickup or an old HSH radius body with a JS neck.

The Lo-Pro rather than the edge was also on JS guitars by 92/93

Could you tell us what colour the hardware is? Or if you can get us a picture, someone will tell you what you've got right away.

I've been conversing with the owner of course, he wrote me before posting here.

This is an odd beast for sure. It looks completely original to me. It's got chrome hardware and a Lo Pro on it. There is no serial sticker behind the headstock and the plate number is close to a 97' BTB I have in my records [HH of course] so it's a possibility some distributor actually ordered a very small run of these.

If I had it I'd instantly pull the neck to check the pocket but looking at the pic I'd have to say it looks 100% original.

Well, with Rich and Jono on the board, we might as well all shut up and let the pro's handle it... OTOH, why should they have all the fun..

Yeah, we need the fun, just as much as the next weirdo.

I feel much better now that Rich has stated it's a rare guitar...
