JS Wiring Trouble, Please help me!

I am rewiring my Ibanez JS-100 guitar with a Dimarzio Fred in the bridge and a Paf Joe in the Neck.

I have wired as shown on the ibanez website (2004 JS-1000 wiring), but the is a VERY loud hum when plugged in and this increases when I touch the strings. I have double checked all the wiring, all solders are clean etc...

If you have any ideas on what might be causing the problem I would be very grateful, Is there maybe a fault on the wiring diagram? I have also tried the earlier wiring diagrams (1999 etc) but I have exactly the same problem?

If you have an alternative wiring diagram for a HH, 1 vol (push-pull high pass filter), 1 tone (push-pull coil split), could you please send it to me?

Thanks,
Kevin

Try checking the Input Jack. It sounds like a bad ground.

Re: JS Wiring Trouble, Please help me!

Hi,

thanks for the fast response. That was what I initially though as well, I changed the input jack but I still had the same problem.

The pots are new, I have also tried changing them, all the capacitors used are new as well so no problems there (also tried changing them).

I've already spent 8 hours trying to solve the problem but with no luck, I'm sure it's some incredibly stupid mistake I've make but I just can't find it.

What is really bugging me is the fact that I tried the earlier JS 1000 diagram and I had exactly the same problem with that.

The pickups are new, Is it possible one of them is faulty? I've never heard of this happening...

Thanks for the help
Kevin

I doubt the pups are faulty. It does sound like a grounding problem.

Are all of the metal parts bonded together via a ground? This includes switch, pots, trem claw, etc.

Everything is grounded except for the switch (not shown as grounded in the diagram). I have tried touching this to ground also but no joy

Re: JS Wiring Trouble, Please help me!

If the switch has a metal casing it should be grounded.

There are usually three terminals on the output jack...did you you use the correct ones?

BTW...it's an output jack, not input.

Re: JS Wiring Trouble, Please help me!

Actually I think I know what it might be. The metal part of the push pull pot to which I connected the pups ground may not be grounded. I need to check if its the same bit of metal to which the ground wire is attached. (pups ground attached at bottom of push pull, ground wire attached at the side).

I'll check that this evening and repost later. Thanks for all you help I'll also ground the switch.

Re: JS Wiring Trouble, Please help me!

You do have to ground the switch.

Here is the stock diagram....

1 volume, 1 tone, H-H, 3way switch (bridge, bridge and neck, neck) w/push-pull for coil tap.

Push-pull for inner or outer coils.....

Yes it is, but I've seen it referred to as both. Solder a wire to the outside of the switch to ground.

Re: JS Wiring Trouble, Please help me!

Thanks very much, I got it sorted. It was in fact the output jack which was not wired to the correct terminal. I made the same mistake on the replacement jack as well, stupid stupid me...

Many many thanks!

Re: JS Wiring Trouble, Please help me!

Cool!!! Make sure you have the polarity correct.

The ground usually goes to the tall terminal.
