JEM 10 Question!!

Hey evryone,
I just want to clarify something.
How is the Binding on the jem 10 made??
is it all just one big slab of binding because i can see abalone, pearl and regular black and white binding.
Does anyone have any idea of the process of how the binding its made?

thank guys
Dave

Re: JEM 10 Question!!

while i havent seen one up close it sounds like you a referring to multiple layers of binding...ibanez did this way back on the paul stanley icemans as well...so when you see a color change from say black to white that is another layer right there...d.m.

Re: JEM 10 Question!!

I understand the multiple layer of binding, but how do they do this on the guitar?
do they route of a really big shelf on the edge of the whole thing?

Re: JEM 10 Question!!

There's the "binding" which is pearloid and then there's the purfling which is the abalone (or abalam or whatever it is)

the abalone is set into the top of the guitar rather than the edge and seems to be done separately in nicely joined up 1/2 inch strips.

Re: JEM 10 Question!!

The general answer is yes, you route a large shoulder (enough to accomodate all layers of binding), and then the binding layers are applied on top of each other. Some people add them one at a time, some add them all at once, some pre-laminate the binding layers together and install it as one piece. Purfling are layers inserted in the top, as jono said. There can be more than one layer of purfling too if desired. One route is cut for the purfling(s) and one is cut for the binding(s). (Or a special cutter is made to cut both routes at the same time, if you have endless funds.)
