Jem 777DY Value

OK, so I started out on the wrong foot here by asking folks to look at my eBay listing and give an opinion on what's a fair price for my 777DY.

I realize how it came across, as trying to tout my guitar for sale. My bad and I apologize. I won't do that again. But what's the politically correct way to ask you guys what my guitar is worth?

I don't want to make a big mistake and get taken to the cleaners, only to see my guitar sell later for five hundred to a thousand dollars more than I sold it for. So is there some guide, or blue book, or some way to get a ballpark idea of fair price?

I'm not looking to get top dollar because she's not mint. I wouldn't even mind if it went for a couple hundred less than fair value, because its just been sitting in the case for the last 10 years. I just don't want to be a fool and sell her for a lot less than its worth. This isn't a Fender, and its 25 years old, which makes assessing its value more difficult.

I'd appreciate some guidance or some advice. Thanks.

Re: Jem 777DY Value

Hi Retroe,

A good way to get started is to look at the complete listings on the bay for your guitar. There will probably be a variety of price point each one was sold for but at least you can:

1) Get a general range for much it sells for from tip top condition-to pretty sad condition and use that to evaluate where your guitar lies in that range given its condition.
2) Look at the guitars' listing description and pictures to gauge what factors affected the guitar value more heavily. Dings, cracks on the neck, electronics, fretwear, etc.

Post pictures of your guitar or use photobucket and post it in this thread so other members can give you what they think is a fair price for it. People here are pretty wise and honest so just take good pictures.

Re: Jem 777DY Value

I did check listings that were completed and the prices were all over the map. Various condition from mint to broken neck. That's what makes this so hard.

She's not faded though, still bright and shiny.

Re: Jem 777DY Value

Here's my question: Would you say this is a $2K, $2k+ or a less than $2k guitar?

Re: Jem 777DY Value

It's a less than 2k guitar IMO. I would value it at around 1600-1800 bucks given the fret condition and the big ding in the bout. Trem is kinda rough too.

This is a great guitar for someone that is actually going to play it and not hoard it.
I would probably have the frets addressed, repaint it and replace the bridge just to have a pretty nice dsy for myself to enjoy.

Nice guitar.

Re: Jem 777DY Value

The lack of fade and the relatively clean board, despite the fret wear suggests right on the 2k area to me.

Re: Jem 777DY Value

Well I appreciate your opinions. Taking them into consideration and seeing what the few others sold for on eBay, I accepted an offer of $1750 +50 for shipping. I didn't want to hold on to it for weeks or months trying to squeak out an extra couple hundred from a higher offer (that might never come).

One thing that sucks though is eBay and PayPal fees lopped a couple hundred off the final price. So I ended up with around $1600 after fees. Oh well, all in all I don't think I did terribly bad, but not great, either. She needs a little work to be a player and it's been sitting in the case for over 10 years. So I just wanted to sell for a fair price and move on. I hope the new owner gives her the TLC that she needs.
