Jem 77FP Neck Value?

Hi,

Hope this is okay to post.

I have a 1989 77FP neck that I am thinking of selling. I am unsure of what to ask for it. Thought I would ask you guys.

So here's the deal. I have a Jem that was autographed by a bunch of guitarists so I hung it on the wall and played my other jem. The Jem was hanging in a house that had a lot of heat from a woodstove and the neck twisted quite a bit. This also caused a small crack on the back of the neck near the nut screwhole. I got a tech to look at the neck. He glued/sealed the crack and put a spacer in with the truss rod. The neck is usable but still has some buzz on the high e 3'rd fret area. I found a brand new, unused FP neck from the classified section on Jemsite that works great.

So I have this neck that is just sitting on top of my guitar amp. The back of the headstock is autographed by Steve Vai. I got him to write one of his song lyrics on there too. I am sure this is the only autograph he has ever signed with this line. I don't mean to say that the autograph makes it more valuable. I am just explaining the reason I am unsure of selling it. I smudged out the lyric in the pictures because I don't want somebody to copy the line.

Anyways, here is a link to the neck so maybe someone could give me a rough idea of what price to put on it if I decide to sell.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If its twisted with a nut crack I wouldn't expect to get much at all for it.

Damn shame that, i would have jumped at it otherwise, at least you know the autograph is worth more than the neck.
iI would sell it and not mention it is twisted or frame it in a box frame for presentation and sell it as a vai signed neck.

Yeah bummer that it's got a twist. I wouldn't sell something and not mention the flaw though, but I get what you mean though. More as a display piece than for use on a guitar.

Thanks.

Re: Jem 77FP Neck Value?

You guys should jump on it...The neck can be fixed by a qualified luthier. If you can get it for a good price and still get it fixed for less then what a "straight" used neck would cost, then buy it!

Re: Jem 77FP Neck Value?

Well lets break it down:

Dead Mint unplayed one sells on the bay for about $750

So it would be fair to assume that one without any issues but played, a little bit of fret ware, a few digs and scratches, all cosmetic, no nut cracks, maybe like $625-$675

A nut crack would take off at least $50-100

A Twist really kills the value because its unknown how bad it is until you look at it and get it on a guitar, small twists can be fixed without a major hassle, but really bad ones would need pro help, might have to steam it back etc..

In all honesty I wouldn't pay more than $200-250 knowing these issues.

To Lefty Robb.

Okay that helps a lot. The way you broke it down is very informative. At least now I have some idea of the $ value. Now I can think about it.

Thanks very much.

Re: Jem 77FP Neck Value?

Well, its just a estimate, at least how I would look at it, its not to say someone wouldn't pay $300 or even $400, prices are getting kind of retarded out there. But the twist is the real killer, Pro help in trying to get it back to normal may run a few hundred bucks, its a real gamble.
