Jem 7VW  Setting up trem to go up - Jem set up

I just got my 7VW and I absolutely love it. During my setting up of this guitar ,I noticed that if you set up the trem as shown  on this site ..you can only pull up about a 3rd(maybe less). As a result , I set it up to pull up about a 4th, however I noticed the action got slightly higher, the string tension increased, I had more strings breaking, I had less "flutter" ability, and of course my downward movement of trem was limited.  I choose to change it back to how  I originally had it  ...seemed I was sacrificing too many things  just to be able to go up a 4th or 5th  with the trem.
Anybody have any other thoughts or suggestions ??
Thanks guys

Congrats on your VWH. I would tend to look for the "sweet spot" in your setup. There is a point there the guitar's setup "finds itself" and yields great action & playability. Personally i go for higher action and take the extra pullup (measuring the 4th on the G-string). Using fresh strings, breakage should be a non-issue when setup properly. If downward movement is limited, you can bend the tremolo arm (at the curve) to allow it to sit higher off the pickguard, and allow further dropping of pitch.

Use the setup as a guideline, not an exact recipe. Good luck... glen
