Which Jem do I buy???

Hey guys, question for you all:

I'll be selling the home I built in the next few months and I'll be building my next house next year. We did really well on the house and I decided, once it closes, I was going to treat myself to a Jem, that under normal circumstances, I would not buy. I worked hard for 2 years... now it's time to treat myself

So, I know many will say guitars shouldn't be investments... and I see your point. BUT, I would like to pick up a Jem that will certainly hold it's value or even go up over time because of its rarity. One of those rare birds

Me, being the swirl fanatic I am, instantly thought, DNA! Of course, I wish Vai could live forever... but could DNA be worth big bucks down the road??

Then there are these 25ths? VSK? maybe Evo??? Original LNG's?

So, my question is, if I wanted to buy a Jem to play but also keep as a future investment, which Jem would be the ticket??

Thanks in advance!

p.s. I'm really not looking to ever sell this guitar. I'm just looking for opinions and insight on what the better buy would be in this situation. I'm not looking for financial advice either, like "if you want to invest your money, buy stocks..."

Re: Which Jem do I buy???

Your comments indicate you absolutely are concerned about resale (which is fine).

If you are going to play it you are going to decrease it's worth. This is why people get on collector/investor because to keep max value you simply can't use it. Swirls are even worse because they also go by their subjective looks.

So ideally you should find a JEM you want in very good condition so using it won't really add more wear/tear. Set a max $ before looking to stay on track.

You could buy an EVO and even if you played it, nobody would know!

You want a Jem that holds its value or even go up, but don't ever want to sell it? So why care about the value then?
I believe that no Jem that gets played will ever will result in a substantial financial profit - at least compared to a house

If you want to play it, buy a Jem in good condition and choose one you really like.
There is also one problem to some of the guitars you consider buying: A VSK or original LNG don't come up for sale every day. You might end up waiting until you sell the next house.

Re: Which Jem do I buy???

From what I can see you have a few choices.

Original swirls seem to be going for less than the new ones, which seems a little strange. EVOs etc are around the £7k area.

How about getting a few guitars for the same amount?

No? I'd go EVO. For the first few months I looked at them going 'what a crock, some idiots would buy anything'. Now I really like them. Such is life.

Whatever you buy, make sure you enjoy it. After all, you've worked hard!

You could probably buy your DNA to keep in case and buy a used 7vwh or something to play. Would spend less than the play wear depreciation over time on the DNA and end up with 2 guitars!
