Re: JEM or JS?

There is no "better" they're just a bit different.

If you are just going to get one, you need to play a few examples of each.

The JS guitars are for the most part more similar, in that the model (with a few exceptions like the JS700 equipped with a mahogany body and neck and p90s or the 24 fret JS2400 model) has remained largely the same. The JS1 is similar to the JS1000 which is similar to the JS1200 which is similar to...

The JEM has had different neck profiles different neck joints, very different pickups and a host of wacky finishes.

In truth though, if you think you can get used to any guitar to play, I'd simply go for the one you like the look of best, that way you'll be happier with it overall and any of them are great instruments

Re: JEM or JS?

I own some js guitars including a JS10th I love them for CERTAIN things, but for overall conditions/styles, I play my '87 RG550 (slightly lower quality jem) I put an evo and a paf for the neck and did the js push/pull functions and I can play most any kind of music. It's hard to beat those 2 and 4 pickup positions when looking for different tone options.

I've played both, and personally much more prefer the Jem. It's faster and sounds tighter to me...just a shredding machine.

Re: JEM or JS?

I've played both.

I prefer the JEM: purely a matter of taste and functionality.

I prefer the thinner neck, I prefer the 5 position blade selector. I prefer the contours on the body.

The JEM is more elaborate also! - vine neck inlays, a grip, more pick ups.....

I prefer the JEM. It's personal preference, of course. As others have stated, you need to try both out for yourself.

Re: JEM or JS?

you can get all kind of different answers, and their all right.
i'm more of a jem guy,if you are looking on a vintage kinda neck go for JS,
if you like more of shreding kinda play which you can do with both but jem i think more
like it.
so, as Jono said you shoul go and play them both before making any decision.

Goodluck

Re: JEM or JS?

I actually prefer fixed bridges but i want one guitar that i can just abuse the whammy with all day XD i liked the Hs config with the coil tap but i also like the HSH config too.so for me it comes down to which neck is more round?Thickness isn't really an issue for me i just hate really flat necks. And the pickups need to be clear at high gain and lower tunings xD this guitar is going to be my C standard guitar.also are these bolt-ons set or what???

Reading this, I'd say you'll like the JS more.
However, if you can test both, you can take your own conclusions.
