jem jr

2015 jem jr is it worth it? Has a dl locking trem instead of the ez2....is the dl worse than the edge 3 or what. about to get my tax return and i like the tree of life inlay. I have a set of gravity storms just sittin in my dresser, but the the trem is a deal breaker for me..so hows the trem quality on this? 499 at american musical supply!!

Re: jem jr

I'd get a late model RG450 with Edge Zero 2.
That Standard DL looks too much like a LoTRS2. Junk!

Re: jem jr

I'm curious about this tremolo, too. I haven't been able to find any specs on it anywhere.

It definitely looks like a Lo TRS II, but I wonder if it is, or something new/different. I've never had a Lo TRS, but wasn't metallurgy a big part of the problem with them? Or was it just a design issue? Would better materials make any difference?

If it really is like a Lo TRS II, you could replace it with an OFR.

Re: jem jr

It looks very like the Lo TRS II, so much so I think I'm suffering from a bout of PTSD. I had one on a '99 Japanese RG450, to say it was terrible is like saying that the Taliban may be a little zealous. You only had to think about using it and it went out of tune. For the same money you'll pick up a used RG550 in good condition or a Prestige 1550/1570, add a couple of hundred to it and you'll probably pick up a Jem 505 (NOT 555) which is a sterling guitar. The guitars I mentioned all have superior trems and are Japanese made. The TRS II will wear you down and make you hate what may be an otherwise good guitar over time. Additionally if you drop another trem in you may as well use the money to get a higher quality instrument.

Re: jem jr

I had one in a JS100 I played in the 90's that had one. It wasn't terrible with a good amount of work but the Edge is far better. An OFR or a good OFR clone isn't bad but who's to say the new version doesn't have a goofy route that won't let you swap it out? LoTRS2 IMO is worse than Edge 3 but suffer from similar problems. Poor precision on the parts, notably the fine tuners, and crappy springs and mounting hardware.
Edge 3 IMO is a better trem. It's kind of silly for Ibanez to go back to a much-hated design.

Re: jem jr

I just preordered the jem jr. Believe it or not the standard dl isn't too bad. I also bought the new rg450ex in silverburst. Sam ash got a couple in pre namm and I nabbed one. It has the standard dl on it. I have 10s on it and so far with all the fluttering/dives/pulls I do on it, stays in tune just fine. I'd imagine eventually I am going to drop an ofr in there, but for now it works just fine. And also, the quantum pickups are not so bad either. I'm going to put d activators or a Steve's special/air Norton in there, but for now not bad at all. Also, the wizard III neck is pretty awesome. Anyways, hope my rambling helped a little bit.

Re: jem jr

Thanks bro. Great guitars. I really like them. They have a lot of sack for imports.

Re: jem jr

Well done and good playing. Let us know how the trem holds up. If my 450 trem had stayed in shape that long I'd have kept it. Those pups sound great too. A lot of people hate stock Ibby pups, but I have never found them to be bad and there are some I quite like.

Re: jem jr

I thought the trem looked like the ILT1 which is crap but direct swap to gotoh which is one of the best.

The question is, does it have locking studs?
