Jem-O-Caster

Anyone here got a jem guitar with 3 single coil configuation like a strat?

ive been thinking of making an Yngwie Strat / Jem hybrid... well, im actually in the process of getting all the bits together now, always liked the idea of a scalloped maple neck jem, and i really dig the H-3 and JYM singles.

so it should be interesting, just wondered if anything similar has been done before?

not quite the same as havine that slanted bridge single you get in a strat setup... and split humbuckers arent quite the same as strat style pole pieces... but yeah, coil splitting is always an option, but having used systems like that in the past, its just not the same, at least, not in my opinion.

it's pretty close imho except for the actual pickups. the coil splitting makes it even better... more tone options. But you can always get a replacement guard w/ 1-1-1 pu routing ...glen

If i went for 3 singles and a brass nut, would locking tuners take the abuse from whammy on the lo pro, or would i need to have a lock nut recessed behind the brass nut?

Rob, I dunno bout the tuners, But Wes Borlands PRS's seem to cope ok, I had an eggle retro fitted with an Edge trem with locking schallers and that stayed in tune fine, As well as a locking nut

I HTH, And good luck ;-)

Rob (the other one, and the UV is still fantastic)

the closest I can think to a Jem-O-Caster is an Ibanez AT100

A brass nut is probably the worst choice for a trem-equipped guitar. Even with regular lubrication, you're likely to experience your strings binding up in the brass slots. You're better off going with bone, graphite, Tusq or GraphTech.

I was thinking of using flat wound 'chrome' style strings, to deal with the problems the brass nut might cause, im not entierly sure what route ill take in the end, but i really want that bright brass nut sound from the open strings.

You are wasting your time that way man...you'll lose any brightness from the brass nut because flatwounds sound dead anyway. It's a neat experiment though, and would love to hear a clean sound sample if you do it...

I pieced together a frankenstein Ibanez with 3 single coils. I used a 550 body, the guts from a standard strat, a Wiz 2 neck, and got a pickguard made by Chandler guards. It came out pretty nice. It's awesome for clean tone and when you want to get a more subdued sound. Can't RAWK like my UV's tho

I say base it around an RG550. Well at least an RG550 neck. Thats got the whole maple neck thing going on. You could even use the body, just get a monkey grip done on it and that. I say its a good choice of project.
Look forward to hearing more!
Gary.
