Re: Jem or Prestige

I think the Sea Foam Jem is an Indo Premium model whereas Prestige models are MIJ, in which case the Prestige is a higher quality instrument.

Re: Jem or Prestige

I would take the MIJ jem505 over an Indo Premium any day of the week...and they are less expensive than a MIJ Jem...but at that point you are in the Prestige price range so them it would come down to your preferences for hardware (OE vs EZ bridge)

Re: Jem or Prestige

YUP! when i bought mine I had the SFG and JEM7EAFX in hand to compare. The 505 really had everything as far as feel went. I was lucky enough to get mine brand new for 550 (it still had the 1057 tag on it!!!)

OE and LP all the way

Re: Jem or Prestige

Looking at evilBay the prices for a 505 compared to a SFG are minor really (if you consider 100 minor) and the only 505's appear to be brand new. The 505 was only made for 1 year so be swift!

Which Prestige model are you thinking about/comparing to?

FWIW...... I agree with the others that a JEM 505 is probably the best "Bang for your buck" option outside of the US.

DO NOT mistake a Jem555 as a 505 (I've seen it happen). Two entirely different guitars. The 555 is a POS in comparison to the 505.

Re: Jem or Prestige

The 505 is both a great prestige RG and JEM. It's made in japan and has all the quality build and components that are imo essential;
- JEM prestige neck with 6105 frets
- Original Edge trem
- gotoh tuners
- colours = black or white
- Maple board
- comes with a prestige hardcase and multitool (yaaaayyy!)

It does not have;
- evo pickups (but so what these can be upgraded easily)
- scalloped frets
- fancy fret inlays.

The 505 is Made in a great factory and some might say with better materials. (with the coolest Ibanez headstock logo)

Notes with my 505 = My only issue was the neck was angled slightly too shallow for the trem to not bottom out. the fix was easy; a 1cm slice of a business card to shim the neck pocket at the neck pick up end. A fun and confidence building little mod worth doing so you learn how easy it is
This issue is a tiny one and is only worth considering IF you do massive pull ups on yer wang bar.
And I removed the nut shims as well.
These things are pretty standard mods and are common with ibbys

The SFG is a Great Premium JEM. it has everything a JEM has except the quality builders in Japan.

American Basswood body as opposed to basswood or alder (not better just different)
premium wizard (RG) neck with jumbo frets
Comes with a gig bag brand new (booooooo!)
colours = Sea foam green

The SFG is good but feels less than nice in comparison to the 505 and the EAFX I tried in store (for hours) the 505 even felt better than the EAFX hence the purchase.

Hope I havent missed anything.

Failing all that KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR ANY LATE 90's RG550 LTD's instead. they are for me the pinacle (if you like the slim neck)

Re: Jem or Prestige

I have an 89 Jem and 98 JPM and a couple of new prestige's some of which are neck through and others bolt on, I reckon the old JPM has the best neck out of them all, and the old Jem not far behind, but the Jem is noticeably more resonant than everything else. From my experience, when it comes to Ibanez the older **** is where it's at for me. In Australia there is a 2 month old used Premium series Ibanez at every corner for sale, that says it all.

Re: Jem or Prestige

MY initial reaction would be to go with the Jem 7vwh but it depends on the condition...if it's in good shape then definitely the Jem 7vwh
