JEM Series basic question - don't laugh at me...

[sorry mods, haven't found anything about with the Search option...]

i feel ignorant by posting this thread, but i just have to figure it out once for all.
the Favorite JEM Series poll had me realising that i don't really know what's different between the 7, 77 and 777 series. yeah i know i can see the tech features and the pics of them all on Jemsite's JEMs gallery, but those won't answer my question. i mean, you have different pickups and woods between models from the same series, just look at the 7VWH and 7RB: different woods, different pickups, different inlays, even different handles! but same series...
can someone enlighten me? plz don't laugh at me

Re: JEM Series basic question - don't laugh at me...

777s were the original neons and the vbk (old, front routed)...

77s were rear routed / clear guard models

and 7s are all the newer front routed ones...

Sometimes the inlay is indicated: 7V is Vine, 7P was pyramids, 7D is dots... but sometimes only the finish/color came after the number

All these holds for the UVs, too

Where it kinda went to hell is the BRMR, cause its front routed and labeled 77... :/

RB and PBK newer models? From 1988?

I think the RB and PRB was "lower" models, hence the single 7. Something between the RG700 series and the Jem777. Just how I see it though.

Following yur thoughts the 7v is between the RG700 and the 777 too however it is much better guitar than a 777 (collectable thing appart)

Even any 77 is better than the 777s

I do not find any relationship between quality and number of 7s. It is not like the stars in a hotel

that's what i meant! anyway, thanks Marianozz, now everything's clearer, even if with some "black" spots.
so i assume that 7, 77, and 777 are just factory number codes, not actual versions typologies. i mean, it wouldn't be very smart to name a series just by the routing place IMHO. you would name it by matching pickups or woods or whatever that can make the customers instantly recognize certain model features. who knows... damn Ibanez!

lol, sorry, the "newer" slipped there in between edits

but nah, it doesnt have to do with the RG series (which derived later from the Jem)... 777 was Steves number, and so the flagship axe carried it...

Spot the RB/PBK 7, not the VWH. The RB/PBK was a lot cheaper than the 777. 2/3 of the price, if I remember correctly (in Norway that is). I sold my 10th because the RB was better. But then again, I believe there is a quality difference from 88 to 96.

Re: JEM Series basic question - don't laugh at me...

well this is why I said there is no quality issues involved in the number of 7s in the same way you well explained the same regarding how old they are.

There are exceptions making both theories not valid.

Re: JEM Series basic question - don't laugh at me...

Yes, agreed. And that's bad. You need to know a whole lot to make anything from the modelnumbers. The RG series was ok, now it's too messy, just like the Jem. Weird...
