Question Which JEM should I buy/or not? And what to pay?

Hi, I've been looking at lots of JEMs on the net, in shops etc. and are looking to get one for around 800 or less (maybe more, depending on the guitar). Which model would be best? OR is an RG or S prestige a better bet?

Ones I have tried:

JEM555 (new & used)
JEM777VDY (from '83 as the guy said - with pink strings!)
RG350DX (new)
RG550...
and more budget S and RGs.

I'm looking to get a 7VWH, but they're a bit pricy here in England (1699 in the local place!). Any help appreciated

just so you know the first model year for JEMs was 1987. The 555 is overpriced for what it is. I would opt for the 550 as your best bet.

if you want a new guitar Id say get a 1570, the 555 is not worth what it costs, and as isaac said, the firts jems were made in 1987, some good options are a 550, 570, jem 77dbk

Do not get a RG350. I know a couple of guys that have one, all crap.
A JEM555 is worth only with an Edge Pro II tremolo.
And the RG550 is great.

For under 800, I highly recommend the RG2550 or RG2570 (and you'll have about 200 change). The stock pickups are good IMO, I found them better than the V7/V8 on RG1570's.

Do yourself a favour and find a US seller willing to ship to the UK..with the exchange rate as it is you'll make out like a bandit even with $200 to $300 shipping and insurance.

If the VDY checks out go with it, if you have problems reading serial numbers (Im guessing you can get the serial number) Post it in this thread we will happily help you out! VDY's also have the orginal wizard profile the most cumftuble of all necks IMO.

Go to ibanezrules, get a cash price quote for the 7vwh.
This is the JEM you should buy and the quote you get is what you should pay...

I'm with TANK. The VDY would be cool if real and in good condition though.

Otherwise, get a JCustom or a Carvin

I disagree about the 350 statement. I have one with the Edge III. The pickups have been swapped and the guitar has been set up profesionally. It just plays great.

To contribute though....go for the RG550. If your budget is 800 you would probably be able to find one of the re-issues for that!

Good luck finding your new guitar

Re: Which JEM should I buy/or not? And what to pay?

I bought a RG570 from 3bay for 200 including postage, small paint chip but I bought it to refinish anyway! replaced the strings (had 10s on it), set the action, great guitar and I even quite like the sound of the pickups, edge trem too!
