JEM Tone Control

What happens when you have the volume on 10 and turn the tone control down to zero on your JEM?

Re: JEM Tone Control

It loses the treble content of the sound and sounds more creamy/muffled

Sorry for the stupid question, I didnít want to lead the conversation by giving other details. My tone control cuts all volume when itís on 0. Not a big deal but that means I have to tear open the electronics and figure out what is grounding when itís not supposed to be.

Iíve only ever used Fender & Gibson guitars and wasnít sure if it was an Ibanez quirk.

Re: JEM Tone Control

I figured there was a deeper question there, and no, it's not supposed to do that.

Re: JEM Tone Control

Have any of you guys seen this occur in the past? It shouldn't be hard to track down but I just figured I'd ask.

Re: JEM Tone Control

In about 1997 I didn't buy a second hand green dot Universe that had this fault, so it definitely does happen

Re: JEM Tone Control

This is the only guitar I have that I didn't have any plans to rewire or replace electronic components in. It shouldn't be a big deal, I would rather just play the thing as opposed to having to open it up. I spend all day as and Engineer, I don't always feel like doing it when I get home.

I was thinking more about it last night and I realized that one of the first things I did after receiving it was remove the protective plastic from the pickguard. When I did this I had to remove the knobs and I took the nuts and washers off the pots one at a time so as not to leave torn remnants of the protective plastic around the nuts. While tightening the tone control nut I speculate the pot turned and inadvertently grounded the outside lug.

probably this, exactly. Just check you grounds and check the tone pot and make sure its not grounded out against the body if there is any shielding paint.

I thought I should update this thread to say that the issue was exactly what I expected. The pot had turned when I tightened it and grounded the outside lug against the body. I aligned it back where it should have been and everything is right as rain.
