Question Jem or Universe

Okay, here is my dilemma, ever since i first started hearing songs with seven strings in them.

THe first song i heard with a seven string in it was Under It All. I heard it and it completely blew me away. I loved the way that steve presented it, and how he made his chords sound huge. That is what inspired me to consider a seven string, also All About Eve, and some others.(The audience is listening )

Now i tried out a black RG seven string at our local guitar center up in summerlin. At first it felt kind of weird, then it felt fine, then weird again after coming back from a six strring. ( A JS Black pearl) When i went back to the JS, it just felt more comfortable, but i love the potential that a seven has. i think that i would like to get a UV777BK.

BUT, my parents keep saying that i wouldn't use the seventh string it for a majority of songs, so it really isn't useful. But, since i showed andy, (the other guitarist in my band, Revolution) a UVMC, he loved it and decided to get one. We want to make originals, but not go chugga chugga on the low string, but present it in a unique way.

This is the major problem, summed up. I tried it out, but the neck felt weird, my parents don't think i should get a seven, but my bandmate thinks i should, so we can both play parts on orignals that he or i may make up.

So, my question is, how fast do you get used to the neck,. if at all, and when you go back to the six, does it feel "right" or easier to play, and should i plan on getting a JEM7VWH, my parent's side, or a UV777BK, andy's side?

PLEASE post your responses!

Thanks
Brandon

Re: Jem or Universe

Get what YOU want! Your parents wont be playing it,or andy.If you know you will make good use of it get it,if you think its just a passing phase it might be worth waiting a while.See if you can play andy's a bit more to find out if it is what you want.

Re: Jem or Universe

well, this has been a sort of thing, that i have been coming back to, even though my parents talk me out of it, i look at the UV, and say to myself, "Goddamn, that is so cool!" It's really the neck setting me back. i've heard it's easy to get used to, but how long does it take? i know playing for half an hour in a guitar store won't be able to tell me.

Re: Jem or Universe

that's a good idea, to get both, which i eventually will, but i'm 15, have no job, and have to make money this summer doing god knows what. so i just have to take it one at a time. the real thing is here, will i be wasting money on a seven, becuase i won't play it because of the neck, or somehting else. that's what i'm trying to find out.

Re: Jem or Universe

When i got my first 7-string (RG2027xvv) it was a bit strange at first but i got used to it very quickly.
I still use my 6-strings and after getting used to the 7-string neck going back to the 6's felt like i was missing something (the extra string, lol!).

Now i'm used to playing both i can swap between the two without any trouble at all.
I can also play the 7-string as a 6 by just ignoring the low B but that also took a bit of getting used to.

I totally love my 7-strings now and couldn't be without one!

Re: Jem or Universe

Well you have to get the 7 just because your parents don't want you to. Ha ha! But seriously, forget what they say -- their opinions are irrelavent here (unless they are paying)

It clearly sounds like you want the Universe, so you need to do yourself a favor and go for it. I don't think it will take you long to adjust. And you can always replace it with, or just add the six later.

The important thing is that you get the guitar that is right for YOU, not for anybody else.

(enjoy that universe)

Re: Jem or Universe

Definetly the UV. I had to sell mine in Feb and now only have a PGM and its just so plain in comparison. Gettin another one as soon as I can afford it. You will get used to the neck in about 3 days and its just as easy to play as a 6 after that. The wider neck actually feels better once you get used to it.

Re: Jem or Universe

I'd get a UV777BK, those are nice. Sadly though, I sold mine but now I have a UV7PWH which I wanted in the first place, still, the UV777BK is a great guitar and one of these days, im going to get another one, those are real nice.
