Jem vs RG3120

I have a choice of buying one - how do you choose?
They both play great!! Money is not an issue.

I like the 3 piece stability of the RG3120 but also like the Jem for it's quirky looks.
Neck profile are different but can't really pinpoint which I would prefer over the long haul.

I like to buy with a keeper mentality. Life is hard?!?!

Help???

Jem!!
Jem Jem Jem! They are so unique!
Now I might ask, what Jem are you looking at buying? That does make some sort of difference.

As an owner of Jems, PGM and RG prestige guitars - not sure what you mean by "light years." The signature models come with premier Dimarzio pickups, but as far as construction and playability, I really couldn't choose. As far as looks, well, Jems win there most days. But quality, playability, .....I'd say my Prestige RG's are on par with the sigs easily.

I'm the 2nd guy who would go for the 3120. I love the way the Flame maple top looks.

Besides, you step on a stage with a Jem and every musician in the audience expect you to play like Vai. For me that's unneeded attention.

Re: Jem vs RG3120

To be honest I think it boils down to a three things

1) Sound
2) Looks
3) Playability

The guitars are different woods, alder for the JEM and mahogany/maple for the RG they have different pickups that (whilst easily changed) accent the differences in the sounds of those woods.

With regards to the looks, one is a brigth metallic blue with a handle and a vine inlay, the other a flame top, two very different styles, which do you like the look of better, the pseudo lake placid blue or teh pseudo-gibson flame top... If you gig regularly which suits you and the style of music you play more, the bright blue or the more "serious" flame top.

With regards to the playability, is there a difference in hardware, I'd always for go for the Lo Pro Edge trem over the Edge Pro, that's my own personal preference. the JEM neck would be more comfortable over long sets and practise sessions, but the Wizard neck might give you slightly more speed in the short term.

Re: Jem vs RG3120

I do have a spare Jem VWH body - would an RG3120 neck fit? I can have the best of both worlds?

I think that this is a fair assessment in terms of the three main criteria that you should be judging against.

They are both high end, professional guitars so in terms of overall quality I would argue that they will both be of similar standard. With one [the 3120] however you are paying a bit more for the "Vai' name. So it really does come down to what YOU want to use the guitar for.

It is a great situation that you find yourself in - if money is not an object as you indicated, buy both!

Re: Jem vs RG3120

Money not an object means I am not using money as a determining factor in choosing the instrument. But the opinions coming in are fantastic so far.
