Jem70V Tremolo Stud Broke

Last night I was trying to lower the action a bit on my Jem70V and the allen head on the tremolo stud just broke in half. The action isn't even as low as I have it on my RG4EXFM1 which cost a third of the price. I'm pretty pissed at this and I was already starting to connect with the way this guitar sounds and plays. I know there have been some Q.C. issues with these but the one I got didn't seem to have any issues until now. Even the paint in the jack was good. Do the gurus of jemsite think I should exchange it or just get a new trem stud? Right now the issue doesn't affect the playability.

Re: Jem70V Tremolo Stud Broke

You'll want to get a new stud. Unfortunately, this one was user error......not a defect in the guitar.

Unlike the studs on your RG4, the studs on the 70V have a small locking set screw inside the stud. You must have bottomed out the lock then applied enough twist to crack the head. I've seen MANY of these. It happens to folks a lot when they're not aware of the lock being there. Use a 1.5mm hex key (allen wrench) down the center of the stud to loosen the lock- the old stud should come out easily after this is done.

Re: Jem70V Tremolo Stud Broke

It's an easy mistake to make, you'll need to buy a new trem stud and probably a locking nut. I suggest you get one from Ibanez Rules as you're in the US. Going from Strats and LPs I would have destroyed several guitars if I had not read the Ibanez Rules site. Even now when I do a setup I open the page in front of me and follow the steps like a recipe. In fact, I first found the site as a result of not being able to fit the 1.5mm allen into any of the visible nuts. The golden rule is: Before touching the outer nuts adjust the 1.5mm inside nut so it's well inside the outer nut, then adjust up or down and tighten the nut so it's hand tight, if you have hands like spanners have a weaker friend tighten it - hand tight to some people is wrung out to others.

^^^ I agree. Also another option is to use the little finger or just one finger while tightening.

I'd like to see a picture of this situation.
